lol, thanks, I was actually having issues with the forum - I was going to post a running report, but it turned out my laptop was at fault. IE8 kept freezing and crashing, it wasn't submitting posts, then after several hard boots my hard drive developed the click of death. I removed it trying to free the head but no joy, ended up slicing my finger open then putting the hammer through the disk in a strange merlot induced technique to free the arm. I wouldn't have minded but earlier this week one of my work laptop's HD's died and I spent days recovering data, now this (and this one isn't coming back as the disk is shattered!), and then I powered up my garage laptop and the screen went black and won't come on. Needless to say I am not a happy bunny, I spend all day fixing servers, applications, networks and infrastructure etc the last thing I want is everything going pear shaped on me at home and having to carry on working when I'm here! I'm now sat up stairs backing up data from my main drive to another drive on one of my servers - not liking the way this week is going!!!
The way the Running Reports works is to email it to Rod Naghar or me, with photos, and I host them on the club server and format the document with links etc. It is normally limited to PCGB members, but I would be happy to include yours. I would have liked to put some of your DIYs on the Technical Articles pages, but it would prevent you from seeing them, and replying. Sure you don't fancy investing £60-odd for membership?

Ahh ok I see. I don't mind it's up to you re the articles and running report. I'm not adverse or totally against paying the £60.00 to join, infact I was planning on it a while ago. I originally joined this forum to seek advice and opinions when I was purchasing a 996, and I am thankfull for the assistance I was given. My way to pay back the community and the club for their advice was to hopefully provide some interesting posts and share information as I learn it. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind supporting the club financially but information and helping members along the way is most important to me, I want to help out the owners and community more than having discounts or services. If the club needs the money then I will subscribe, but I would imagine it's doing ok without little old me Either way you are most welcome to move / take information from any of the posts I have made, and I will read up and mull over full membership.
You can join the forum without being a PCGB member (as a Guest) but you need to be a member to access several areas of the forum, like the 996 Technical Articles and FAQ pages, and the Member's Only forum.
I think they should make all the Forum members only, apart from the for sale section as none members folks may want to get into a Porsche and once buy join a bit like i have for now year 7. And also the regional section for the same reason. You may loose the odd person with good input like Steve, tipsy or not its great reading, but i am sure after time of ownership these folks, if they love the brand will join to have there input. I may have not joined knowing the Forum was avalible to none members (OK - not all sections) but will continue to be a member as i have had so much good from this club (forum) Just my thoughts. Phil
Without the non-members it would be a lot quieter on here. Hopefully after seeing the benefits of the forum and reading about the meetings, events, and discounts, etc, they will be encouraged to join. PCGB has a bit of a stigma about being elitist, but by visiting here they can see that we are mostly a bunch of (relatively) normal people. []

I understand your view. The problem with making a forum members only though is that you won't generate as much interest - it becomes less of a community and more of an exclusive club, but IMHO not in a good way. In other words you won't generate the interest from joe blogs who is thinking of entering Porsche ownership but hasn't comitted yet. I've no doubt a large number of members join the public forum when they are at that stage, but don't want to pay £60 just to say 'Hi' and that they are 'thinking of buying x, y or z'. I doubt anyone would pay up front to join a community they were not even sure they would like to be a part of. I don't want to turn this into a debate about whether people should or should not subscribe on the public forum far from it. I've supported many clubs in the past by subscribing, and without funding they may not exist (unless there were a large amount of volunteers). That said I've also joined many communities and forums without subscribing - if I subscribed to every forum and club I was on it would turn the fees into something of a utility bill. I understand why certain things are restricted to generate revenue and more interest in membership, and people have given up their time also to conduct research, give advice and information, that is their right. If everything was free for every tom dick and harry you would have people turning up left right and centre getting all the free advice they need and then vanishing without making any contribution to the community at all, which isn't really in anyones interest and won't keep a club running. I've been trying to find the time to pop up a site with some info and resources on, not to smite anyone or club, but to offer a friendly bit of info to people who want to make the jump into Porsche ownership but are worried or perhaps think they are some mythical thing that they shouldn't touch with a spanner and will cost them 1000's upon 1000's a year to do basic things to. In my opinion I think that this will be a good thing and only generate more interest in the marque (not that little old me will make that much of an impact lol). I'm not saying that I should or should not subscribe for any particular reason, simply that I believe that as with everything it goes two ways. PCGB isn't a charity, so I ask for advice and opinions, and I give advice and opinions. As objective or pompous that may sound, that's the way I view my part on this forum and at some point I may or may not subscribe. I've kind of lost myself now anyway lol, but we should probably bring this one to a close P.S thanks for saying I give good input well other than this thread lol!

Your reply took a quarter of the lines and was much clearer than mine You can tell I haven't had much else to do the past couple of evenings!ORIGINAL: Richard Hamilton Without the non-members it would be a lot quieter on here. PCGB is a club, not a business, albeit a big club with a big income, and overheads to match. I actually subscribed before joining the forum. I figured that £60 was a drop in the ocean compared to the cash I spend running my car each year (less than a tank of fuel). I'm not knocking your opinion - I just prefer to be a part of the club than not.
I guess if you put it like that then fair enough, then i guess it makes sense, non members like steve have good input and give this section more intresting input than a member like me does. Maybe i shouldnt say this on here, but if i let my membership run out i could still get the 10% discount at my OPC as they never ask to see my card and know me. I also always get invited to the open day clinic, and i can use this Forum, which i get the most out of the club from. I also turned up to the monthly area meeting no one asked for my membership number or any details about my membership, just my name and gave me a sticker, so i guess you can still go to the meetings etc, so as a none member you can get a lot from the club. At the same time i still intend to stay as a memeber. Phil
