The 924S race car is dead, long live the 951 racer

My trusty 924S racer is about to be retired; it did extremely well for me but it's heart weakened in its last race and had low blood pressure and so it's time to put it down and move on.

I think some of the useful bits will be transplanted to help other cars have a continued fulfilling life.

It will be replaced by a 951.

Built for the PCGB Club Championship and then used in the Porsche Open. More recently used in the Porsche Open in Ireland and last raced in Ireland by Jamie Chadwick (2015 British GT4 champion, Aston Martin GT4) whilst she was chasing signatures for her International Licence about a year ago......

Have a look from about 10 mins 16 secs in.......

It will be in my garage, and coming to a CSCC Future Classics race soon, hopefully.

I couldn't help myself.

I tried to ignore the temptation but couldn't!

Andy,

it would be a great car for the advantage Motorsport Future Classics, give Anthony some serious competition. Bring it on!

I can see Tom and I will need to do some more work over the winter.

As per my post on PH this is good news! There will be a few of us out to play in turbos in Future Classics next year, sorry Gerry :p Although saying that I'm still very much a rookie and I'm quite happy somewhere in the middle of things at the mo so there's very little risk of me being at the front!

When do you think you'll be out in it Andy? I'm hoping my car will be ready for Donnington...

Good luck Andy, It'll be nice to see another 951 out on track.

I support the orange Boxster (Broad/Broad) in the Modern Classics atm, I'll be rooting for you [:D]

It's been more than a decade since I followed a 951 on the racing circuit, not since Porsche banned them from the club championships after they kept beating the new GT3's....lol... what is the series that this will run in and what class will the 951 be within it, any details please?
I could be tempted to revisit motor racing...:)

cheers

Pete

I think we're all competing in CSCC Future Classics of Modern Classics Pete: http://www.classicsportscarclub.co.uk/?q=Future%20Classics

The PCGB Championships are all very upmarket these days and well outside my budget! All the CSCC series are all very simple on eligibility rules, but of course they are open to people with big budgets dominating but that's generally the case with all motorsport irrespective of the regs! However the club is run on a big focus towards fun and sensible, non-contact racing. I've not yet raced in Future Classics, but have raced a few times now in Tintops and I've been really impressed with the club and the general feel of the meetings; everyone seems to be in it for the right reasons. Hence I'm building my own car to compete in FC ('ruining' a perfectly decent '86 951). Can't wait!!

I will race it in the CSCC Future Classics series for cars from the 70s and 80s. 40 min 2 driver races. There are usually a fair few Porsches in this series, and the 944S2 is so numerous it has its own class.
l will be racing in the 3 litre to 4 litre class. There are 2 or 3 other 951s registered and a couple of 928s as well but not all out together. Usually full grids though.

The plan is to debut the car in a 20 min Allcomers race at Donington on Sunday 22 May that the Morgan Sports Car Club are running (and to which CSCC folks are invited) and we will take it from there.

i won't have chance to test it before hand so it will be a baptism of fire but I'm hoping it handles just like my 924S, but with more power!

i doubt I will be really challenging anyone too much really, not even in FC, as the engine is standard and I think for reliability sake I may keep it that way. So it will be nice to have a battle with a few S2s ocassionally as I'd expect similar power to weight, but I do not have the talent of some of the S2 drivers!

Yeah last time I saw a turbo at CSCC it spent a lot of time lapping us and then unlapping itself at the side of the circuit :( was a rocket, great to see but think the chap running it wanted to blow every car away!

It's not too late to find a S2 (much cheaper) and come join in the fun! ;)

Good stuff chaps! Likewise Andy I'm keeping my fairly pegged down; it has fairly basic performance modifications but other than switching to a K26/8 and probably VEMS in future I don't want to risk (nor can I afford!) going silly with power. 280-300 hp should do nicely and still be reliable, or I hope!.. Like I say I'm not aiming for the front and I'm doing it for the fun not for glory [:D]

I did consider going for a ready prepped S2 Tom, but I'm kind of hooked on the 951 for track use: I just think it's more of a challenge and I much prefer the noise and power delivery. Plus being as hardly anyone else is using them for racing these days I thought I'd be different, although that probably won't be the case now! It will be great to have a mix of 944's to race against.

All the best for the first outing Andy [;)]

thanks for the info guys....looks like an interesting series...I'll do my best to get along to spectate at a few meets...should be fun..:)

The entry is in for the Morgan Sports Car Clubs invitation race next Sunday, 22 May, at Donington.

wish me luck.

Surely flat in a 924S on sticky tyres Andy? :)

My S2 will just about go through flat from the exit of redgate if conditions are right (maybe I'm not exiting redgate fast enough..). First time I did this the back end let go in a slightly alarming roll-oversteer moment, which is not what you want in the middle of Craner curves [&:] Fixed that with stiffer springs. Needs some courage though..

Anyway, where are the pics?

I think I run out of talent well before the car does through the Craners, probably why I'm slow.

The 951 is still being checked over, and I'm away on holiday at the moment so no pics yet.

Flat through yes but not on initial turn in on the run up. Its something Alex Eacock convinced me of and he was 100% correct, its much less scary to drive through it over the kerb on the left with the right peddle mashed down than it is to pussy foot it as the power keeps the back end planted down and stable. Genuinely I found the following corner much more scary as its easy to get out of shape or cock it up on the way in and loads of crashes happen down there.
