The 944 Lux (hidden gem)

As some may know I was lucky enough to purchase the white 1984 Lux that's was on sale via eBay a month or so back. A bit of a punt but after cleaning the brakes, sorting the sills and a little no cost TLC she really is looking great. The Fuchs alloys and cheese grater finishing off the Alpine white car perfectly. My 86 Turbo has gone in for some mechanical investigation to see what mods the previous owner/s have done and to calm her down a bit. So whilst the beast is away I've been driving the Lux and I have to say its an absolute pleasure. It drives brilliantly for it 150 bhp, id even say better than my Turbo in its current guise. This was originally a turn and burn but I am now really thinking of keeping her.

I agree. The Lux is a really nice balanced car. It is light and agile and grips like a grippy thing. As a B road blaster it is up there with the best.

Many years ago a group from this forum had a driving holiday in Scotland. I think we covered most of it in the week. As well as extravagantly modified Turbos we had a 924S in the group (to all intents a slim Lux). At no time was the 924 found wanting around the roads of Scotland.

We had both a Turbo and a Lux for a time and I agree that the Lux is nicer to drive. I was going to say that it's only down fall was on a motorway when, if you had a hot hatch up your bum you couldn't monster him. Now, with the proliferation of hidden speed cameras, that point is probably irrelevant.

told you so... [:)]

My white 924S was the sweetest road car out of the three I've had (turbo & S2).

Funnily enough I was looking back fondly at pictures of my old S. I have only driven one 'Lux', a 2.7, but it was a bit rough so not much of a comparison.

However, looking back, and I said the same when I had the S and 951 at the same time, the S always felt a little more agile and playful than the 951. This was mainly down to the fact that my 951 is a lot stiffer, and lower, so corners a lot flatter, which strangely makes it feel a little more numb, and so less playful. No doubt the Turbo handles and goes better than my S did, although I'd say a well driven S around the twisties isn't going to be far behind a 220 Turbo, I just prefer the low down torque/shove.

I do still miss my S though. It was a very tidy 944, looking back makes me realise that, I also had more use out of it than I have my 951 in the past year due to a few little niggles. Hopefully I'll be able to put a few of those niggles to bed over the next month or so and get some more use out of the old girl!!

I'd not swap my Turbo for another NA 944 now, but I'd have one beside her!!

Hi - can I ask which tyres, and sizes, you're using? I need a new set.
Cheers, Howard
