the age old question..

smallspeed

New member
I know this gets asked more than anything else, and also causes more controvesy (apart from maybe tyre choice [;)] ) but whats the best oil for my '64?.. Its got around 185k on the clock, and seems good and strong to me; light mods (cup/decat pipes and a cone filter), every day useage..

I have always used Mobil1 15w/50 in the past, but its damn expensive, and Im wondering if theres anything better or as good for a bit less cash.. Also any alternatives I might want to look at?..

Going to costco or france for my Mobil1 isnt really an option, so highstreet/internet options only please!..

If its not broken don't fix it [;)] How much do you pay for your Mobil at the moment?

I use Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 as its got those magic Esters in it that cling to your engine components, reasonably priced. I got mine from OpieOils (with a club discount)

There is a whole lot of oil speak here:

I use the Silkolene ProS stuff as well, as do a few of the RS boys.

From Opie oils, club discount, decent service etc

Might be an age old question Ben, but it's an important one!

The other is whether you should use semi or fully synthetic !! which opens up even more questions. I've even viewed the recommendations by the 'Oilman' on this subject! When i asked my inde, he said any branded semi synthetic !!!

Arguments start here [:D]

I really don't understand this thing a lot of independents have with semi-synthetic oils. To me they are a marketing fudge. A 911 engine gives its oil a hard time, so the stability of fully synthetics is the way to go ( IMHO)
There is no viscosity difference between a 5/40 Mineral /Semi-Synthetic/Synthetic oil, so why compromise on an oil which will break down more quickly? You might as well buy a mineral oil and change it every 3000 miles

Those were my thoughts to Pete. I think with some questions you get a multitude of answers and opinions..... do's and don'ts ...... pro's and con's ..... i came to the conclusion, aslong as its a top brand and right grade and changed regularly, surely you can't go wrong ..... can you??

i get my mobil 1 from halfords, seems the cheapest place at 47 quid for 5 litres, which is a lot of money as mine gets changed twice a year..
will check out the castrol stuff and see how that stacks up; i dont really want to change as someone said "if it ain't broke.." but it would be nice to be able to change it for £60 rather than £120!

sorry, meant silkolene, not castrol.. 10w50 seems to be £40 so a bit cheaper for 5 litres than mobil 1, but then do i want to change for the sake of £20?..

is 15w50 or 10w50 right for these engines? this is what i have always been told by OPC and my indi, but you guys seem to be running thinner oils.. i guess i might be better off with a thicker oil due to my high mileage

Mobil 1 is great for new cars, and cars with good engines - Porsche stuck that into the 964 when they built it. Older cars seem to be fine on magnatec etc. In the end, as long as the oil is good and changed regularly I don't think it makes any difference. Chances of hitting the loads where the choice of oil/temp would be a wear factor is very slim. Heard good things about most good synthetic oils. Short of doing track days in finland or arizona, I don't think you will see a difference between the choices.

thanks for the responses guys..
Its kind of immaterial now, as my dad came up to visit this weekend and brought with him 10 litres of 15W50 Mobil 1.. I'm not sure what inspired him to do that, but seems like he got a good deal from a local motor factors near him of £80 for 2 x 5 litre bottles (they had a random batch of 5 litre bottles in and were selling them at the 4 litre price without realising! )
will get on and change the oil and filter, put the front brakes back on, and I should be back on the road!..

With a 185k on the clock I would stick with what works.

If not go for a good quality 15/50 or 10/40 I always use semi synthetics.

I had similar thoughts when it came to oil change time on my Boxster. In the end I bought 2x5 litres of Mobil 1 via Ebay. The chap I bought from runs a company called Matt Lewis Motorsport and I got the lot for £63 including postage, which I thought was a very good deal.
