The all-important sticker - where is it on a 997??

Hi there,

A friend of mine has just bought a 997 C4S Cab privately, and is very chuffed with it - he and I spent a while yesterday looking over it and comparing it to my 996 Cab.

We had a slightly awkward moment when I asked if he had checked the sticker under the bonnet to make sure the VIN numbers, option codes etc matched ... it turned out that there was no sticker there. So, did Porsche move the sticker for the 997 to somewhere else*, or has he been sold a crash-repaired car?

TIA

Michael

*if so, where????

Just checked on my car which was bought from new and no sticker so no need to be alarmed. Don't know where it actually is though.

See this thread for some end-less discussion on MY2004 but for 997 it is clear-cut; Porsche now have only one sticker and it is placed in your service book...

I'm sure there is a sticker with the VIN number on the inside of the drivers door frame, just above or below the locking mechanism / door catch.
Could be wrong though....

You're right that only contains the VIN number. The sticker in question, called the VIL sticker, also contains the VIN number among other information (model no, engine no, paint code, optional equipment etc)

In July 2006 the sale of an immaculate 997S that I had had from new fell through initially when the first potential purchaser noticed there was no sticker on the bonnet. His immediate conclusion (understandably) was that the car had been in an accident. He walked. At the time I was nonplussed about the lack of a sticker but rang Porsche GB who explained that they no longer put one on the bonnet. Next purchaser bought it and the first guy lost a very nice car. Just shows a little knowledge can be dangerous.

Personally I think it is daft of Porsche not to continue with the system of putting a spec/options label on the car. Sometimes service books are lost, it was really good to actually have the sticker under the hood showing the spec & options etc

I believe that OPC's computers can print out the full list of option codes if they input your VIN, so if you can't find your 'Sticker' or have lost your Handbook, ask your local OPC for a printout.

I would have assumed a replacement service book would have the sticker as well; so it is hardly the end of the world. Plus, it is just a print out sticker, if someone wants one under the hood then just photocopy the service book and superglue it under [8|]
