Sums it up quite well, £2K cheaper than the Boxster, nicer looking than the Boxster and Cayman is a better name, choose your spec and start you engines!

 
As a Cayman R manual owner for the past 4 years, I cannot get enthusiastic about this new 718 Cayman.

To me, it seems a lost opportunity to "downgrade" the 718 Cayman to the entry level model. It's worth more than that.

The marketing people at Porsche have far too much sway in my opinion. The GT4 was a move in the right direction. These "suits" have stymied that option now.

Sad really.

I know where you're coming from Brian and have some sympathy with your point.

The Cayman will of course be cheaper to produce than the Boxster, so the price reduction should be welcomed in that respect, and if it helps promote sales, as Cayman enthusiasts I suppose we should be pleased to see more of our fine cars on the roads being enjoyed by their owners.

I agree apart from the name Kev. To me it's always sounded too much like Cayenne (very effective but not something I've ever wanted), and a way of dodging tax (something I've never really done and sadly aren't wealthy enough to need to!)

 
I went to the 718 Boxster launch the other evening and it's still a great car and the best in its class yet the lines aren't a smooth as the original 981, new rear end and silly reflectors on the lower half of the bumper. I agree the 718 Cayman is definitely the better buy and more of a car but also feel that it has lost some of it's front end aggression of the 981 Cayman bumper and I now find the new model hard to distinguish with the Boxster. I'm happy with my 2016 Cayman S 3.4.[:)]

 
I entirely agree with Gaz. The new 718 cayman has lost it's "bite" in the form of less aggressive looks. It is looking softer now and very much an entry level "baby" Porsche in my opinion. The purposeful looks of the 987 CR and also the 981 GTS, were absolutely spot-on as a lead-up to the More aggressive GT4.

Porsche marketing have seemingly down graded the Cayman with the 718 I feel.

So, for me it's not only the 4 pot turbo that's the issue, it's also the softer more feminine look that is the problem.

There still great cars in every respect it's a pity they are now 4 pot in my opinion let's hope Porsche see sense and make the next GT4 & Spyder back to the 6 pot we all love.

Please bring on a 6 pot on these special models at least.

 
Absolutely!

The Cayman series has great potential as a mid-engined platform. I only hope the motorsport department get the sign off from these dreaded marketing people to develop the 718 model into a driver's car in it's own right. Not as a competitor to the 911, but as a complimentary model for those who need only 2 seats and prefer a mid-engined chassis. Simple yes?

Currently it's looking very much like the marketing people have downgraded the Cayman within the sports car range. I can already hear the 911 stalwarts harrumphing with satisfaction at the Cayman being put back in it's place as the Porsche you buy if you cannot afford a 911.

I hope I am wrong about that.

Saw the 718 today. It looked good from every angle but the front looked deliberately tame, as if to leave room for facelifts and sportier models that are already penned and then reversed out to come up with the launch design. The receding chin is bound to come forward on a sportier model or receive a lip to counter that contour in the future.

With the performance now on tap in the 718 I wouldn't say it's been downgraded. They're going to be plenty fast and not lacking the torque at higher speeds/gears like before. The 718S matches the Carrera on performance figures.

 
Agreed 6 - I can see a more agressive GT4 front end grafted on. I quite liked the enhanced creases on the front and rear wings; the front ones could make it easier to sight the front end when turning into a corner. Harping back to the traditional raised lamps on the classic 911s perhaps?

The interior is basically 981 with a revised fascia top featuring new air outlets and a repositioned Sport Chrono clock. The sport steering wheel looks good but the attached rotary switch for the SC is a bit naff.

I was at the Hatfield preview and hung around to the end when they started moving the cars out of the showroom. The cars had a typical low speed 4-pot burble and sounded quite purposeful when revved up, albeit in the confines of the showroom. I'm sure that most customers will be more than happy with the package.

The performance will be better than the 981, people driving it will need to learn the difference in driving a turbo but that in itself can bring on a grin factor in the way the power comes in. In my view it was always wrong that the Cayman was more expensive than the Boxster, development of the chassis design had already been paid off and the build costs of the coupe is always cheaper than the drop head so we were being overcharged from day one and I'm sure that the price difference did decide some to take a well spec'd Boxster over a slightly more basic Cayman, yes PaulJ I've had people think from talking that I had a Cayenne usually 4x4 fans and I must say that the naming seemed strange at first but then more apt than the name of the Cayenne, why name a 4X4 after a type of pepper...maybe they thought they were marketing it to tv chefs... without what looked to be a trend in spelling Cay... but the Cayman name makes more sense both the animal and the car are very agile, responsive and fast compared to many others of similar types. I expect the sound of the new engine to be a little more raw than the 6 pots and to some ears it may not sound so fast, after all, gearing will be similar so less percussions per rev but it will have a characteristic Porsche sound. We'll soon see when the first production cars begin to arrive and some of us have had test drives.

I think that Porsche was the only manufacturer charging more for the coupe version over the roadster, so a price realignment is more than welcome, and I agree with your comments about the name Cayman - an excellent name for a sports coupe. By the way, I believe that the 718's gearing is identical to that used in the 981, and I anticipate that the high gearing will better suit the turbo engine's torque characteristics.

I really hope that the 4-pot cars will be accepted on merit. After years of hearing the mid-engine car owners complaining that 911 owners don't view them as "real" Porsches, I'd hate to think that we're now going to look down on the 4-pot turbo cars as being in some way inferior to their normally aspirated stablemates.

Like you, I'm looking forward to getting a 718 Boxster drive...but only when the weather warms up a bit..!

Yes Jeff, no one looked down on the 944 turbo, it was as fast as the 911 3.2 of the time handled better and could carry the luggage for a continental road trip with a back seat my mother in law could fit in, not that we took her on road trips. Apparently when the flat 6 came out in the 911 there was an outcry that it wasn't a real Porsche, it wasn't a flat 4! It's true that you can please some of the people some of the time but never all of the people all of the time, now the the new Cayman has been shown I did have play on the configurator and the car I would spec came out at the same price as the 981S I spec'd and also the 981GTS. So prices are still about the same, however I will be sticking with my 987.2 and continue to hope for an increase in the pension, yes, fat chance!
