The basics?

Hello

I have recently bought a 1986 944 S - needs a few bits early doors but seems pretty decent so far.

Having never owned a Porsche before I was wondering if you lot (as experts) could ease me in the right direction with the absolute basics such as:
The type of fuel it will run best on? (my old car was terrible on Esso but good on Shell V-power..)
Type and grade of oil?
Approximate cost of a service for a 24 year old 944?

Any other tips/advice for a novice owner of older Porsches?

Any advice much appreciated,

Cheers, Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Welcome to the forum and Porsche ownership nice to have another S on board, I run mine on mainly Asda & Tesco fuel with no problems I do now and again treat her to Shell V power and do seem to notice a differrence (and the cost!!)

Oil I use is Mobil

I had a 12,000 mile service carrried out at OPC in March for £361.00 inc VAT

Enjoy your car

OPC - yep Porsche centre.

Haynes manual, good for lighting fires or squashing spiders unless you have a pre 1985 US car.
In fact a Ford Capri manual may be of more use.

Indeed the Haynes book of lies is right up there with chocolate teapots in the usefullness category.

Much better is this

Hi, and welcome. It's impossible to guess the cost of any service on an older Porsche, I've paid from a couple of hundred inc. MOT, through to over a grand. The good news is that parts are readily available and often cheaper than you'd think, as long as you go to a PC for a price first. (PC is for Porsche Centre, the new name for OPCs. [:D]) Plenty of other specialist suppliers as well, and some parts are common to other cars, usually VW group. Avoid e-bay rip-off prices by ALWAYS checking around first.

Read through the FAQs, and browse the previous forum threads, to learn all you'll ever need to know about your new car. Manual is available to download free from the Promax website.
