Personally, I'm not a lover of 0W oils, and use a 5W-40 or 10W-40 myself, but then again my car has done 78000 miles. If you are going to DIY then I would follow Mer's advice and give Simon Barnard a call. He really does know his stuff.

Robin - There is a list of Approved engine oils in the Technical Articles section , which you won't be able to read as a non-member. If you would like a copy, send me an email and I'll attach it to reply.

Richard,
I have found it hard to get 5W in the UK and places like Costco and other retailers only sell 0W (assume because winter up North get severe and they have to sell something which works for the entire country, though 5W and 10W are okay for temperatures above -10C), I assume you have to go to oil specialist like opieoils to get 5W or 10W in the UK? The batch I got from the French supermarket last time was 5W 40...

Being less than 3 years old why not stick to what Porsche recommend and what is already in your car if it has been serviced by OPCs:
Mobil 1 0W 40
Well, Porsche obviously have a business partnership for the recommendation, so it doesn't mean nothing else will work...
It might have left the factory with Mobil1, but if you think every OPC uses it during servicing then you are sadly mistaken - they can use anything off the approved list, so why would they choose one of the more expensive options? Sheffiled and Notts used to use Shell Helix, about half the price of Mobil1 when they buy it. Even Castrol Magnatec is approved, so i dare say there are some devious dealers using that to increase their profit margins (especially now service costs are fixed across the country).
If you can supply your own oil - do it ! - you have a better chance of knowing what is in the engine, and you can save yourself £40 off the OPC oil pricing too.
Mobil1 is still a good oil, but others have matched or bettered it (remember Mobil1 first appeared around 1990 when other oils were semi synthetic at best). I've used Fuchs Titan Sythetic for years - its 5W40 viscosity is probably better suited to UK temperatures than the 0W40 of Mobil 1.

Yes, good point, the OPC that use Mobil One for definite are the Porsche Cars GB owned one i.e. Reading, Hatfield, West London and Guildford. We had guys from Exxon Mobil at the Ace BBQ on official capacity for any Q&A last month with the Porsche engineers and they did say they supply the oil to all the Porsche Centres but that could have meant the Porsche Cars GB owned Porsche Centres only...
David - I've heard good things about the Supersyn 5W-40, and I am going to try that next.
Sanjib - You won't feel a difference as such. I found that using a 5W-40 has eliminated the occasional start-up tappet clatter I used to get. I put it down to the fact that the oil is thicker than 0W-40 at ambient temperature, and so doesn't drain from the hydraulic tappets as easily.

FWIW, I use Mobil1 5W-50 Motorsport edition. The 50 rating provides better protection at high temps, and the 5W rating provides more than adequate protection when starting up from 'cold'. Sadly it's not easy to find the 5W-50 except at certain Tescos!
On a 911, especially the air-cooled variants, I would not use anything with less than a 40 rating since the oil serves double duty in cooling.
