The Big Question: 944 or 924S

Hi All,

I've been looking for a 924 for a while, specifically a 924S (I fancy something with a bit more poke than the n/a and the type of driving I do doesn't justify a turbo), but have recently come across a place with a couple of mint condition cars. One 944, and one 924S. Both within my price-range, both the right colour, both would be great but...

Which to choose??

I'm not sure on the exact years of the cars in question, but the 944 is a 2.5Lux with the post '85 oval dash, so is pretty comparable to the 924S, so I'm told. Is that right?

What do you reckon I should go for: 924S or 944

(The gauntlet has been thrown down, now lets get the debate going!!)

Which to choose??

I often suggest people consider the 924S as well as the early Lux if they are on a low budget. Personally I prefer the oval dash interior, and the look of the '44, and the bonded windscreen, so that would be my choice.

I knwo it's not what you are judging between, but the 924S has the same engine as the 944S, and yet the 924S is regarded as a half-decent car while the 944S is unloved.

Why so?

Oli.

Cheers!
Am I right in thinking that the choice is predominantly aesthetic?
Is there much difference in the figures (comment about shapely hips aside, I mean bhp/0-60/mpg/service costs etc)?

Oli - every day is an education for you.....[;)]

924S is the 8v engine. 944 Lux also. 944s 2.5 16v.

Easy, isn't it!

That's what I thought, but didn't want to say anything being the newbe and all!
Isn't the 8v slightly downtuned for the 924 though? (but countered by the reduced weight and better aero's of the 24 making the cars pretty comparable??)

Am I also right in thinking that the brakes and suspension (and most of the other peripherals) on the Lux are the same VW/Audi parts as the 924S?

I think the Last S' were Given the Full 944 BHP ..as the 944 Became a 2.7 in that year..I might be Wrong but I read it in Practical Classics or some such mag!
The only Problem I have found is Finding good Wings when Some ÂŁ$%^&* Has Bumped into them!

924S all the way - virtually a 944 in a slightly less heavy shell. The dash hasn't aged well though it can look decent when in excellent condition.

Really?

Crumbs, I am a dunce. Sorry everyone for having asked such a stupid question.

I was sure the 924S was the 2.5 16v engine from the 944S.

Did this engine (2.5 16v) ever make it's way into the 924, or am I completely imagining things? Was the 944S the forst foray by Porsche into the world of 16v heads?

Apologies for such a display of gross ignorance chaps. Thanks for still talking to me. (Oh, don't tell me, you're not. Heigh ho, understandable I guess, given the circumstances.)

As far as I know there was never a 16v 924, I'd imagine 4-valve technology was used in racing but I wait to be corrected!

Just thought it worth repeating.....[;)]
You can always trust a kind, friendly moderator to make you look your best, can't you!

Thanks for the (much more helpful!) comment about the 4v head on a 924, or the lack of one.

Oli.

The 924S 2.5 litre engine is actually down rated by 10bhp, the 944 2.5 litre engine is 163 bhp. (Figure from memory so subject to correction) [:)]
Is truth I find the 924S a much nippier car, it feels more sportier than the 944 whilst the 944 is much more comfortable on a run. Either one is 'A van that goes like sh1t!

Cheers,

now I know its a wind up.[8|]

OP doesn't do a simple search on the forum or the most basic research on the net or in a book even. Expects us to do it all for him. [:(] Next question will be what colour should I buy ?lol I don't mind helping anyone who at least helps themselves a little

.Sorry but I knew where this thread was going as soon as the OP said

A normally asppiratead 924 with 190 bhp, there's a thought!

I know of at least one 924 with a 968 engine and running gear, I was serioulsly considering the same mod to my old 924S but had too much respect for it to modify it. My 924S was the best car I have ever owned and I wish I still had it.

For the last year of production (1986?) the 924S got the 'full fat' 944 engine with the higher compression ratio etc and the full 160bhp.

My folks have got a lovely D plate one and it is indeed a lovely car to drive, albeit quite a bit softer in the suspension than the equivalent 944 (and has a narrower track too), so it rolls a bit more but beautifully balanced.

Looks pretty timeless too IMHO[:D]
