Here is Sabine putting us in the picture. Don't think much of her skid lid though!

Nice idea Des but I don't think it was built purely for Mercedes, tho' the combined financial clout of the German auto industry could surely buy it.
OK and Auto Union .... The track was built by Hitler to demonsrate the superior power and handling of German Engineering namely both above, there was mainly only inferior road circuits with various surfaces to scramble round .... Yes the German Automotive Industry could just step in, only problem it would become much more regulated and restricted as a private track[]

It was built in the 20s, opened 1927 - way before Hitler. The initial idea was to bring some ecomomy into one of the poorest areas in Germany.
It really worked, the Eifel really needed the Ring and the tourists started to bring money into the area - still do. The Ring today, after these senseless buildings, is in trouble. I read a serious statement that it would be cheaper to destroy all the new buildings, because the running cost and the potential loss will be higher than the the "worth" of all the new buildings and the cost of destroying them.
We´ll see, I don´t think, the Ring will die. But it has lost a part of its unique character, everything - not only the laps - is ridiculously expensive. I have no confidence in the new management, too.
The whole process is under investigation, one minister had to quit, police is chasing some people, books are written, it´s on TV....

We have nothing in the US that has such a rich history in motorsport (I don't count Indy as it's just a circle track). Many of the tracks I race (Road America, Gratten, Blackhawk, Gingerman, Road Atlanta & Autobahn CC) are privately owned and much smaller. They've expanded by adding better facilities, better viewing access and getting more sanctioned race events. Thank God none of them have tried the Disneyland approach as I believe it would fail as well. NASCAR is trying to save itself and trying the same gimmicks as Richter/Lidner to no avail.
I agree with Hacki, that would it be better to tear the new crap down.
Have there been any documentaries on it for better exposure? Clarkson should do a whole series of Top Gear at Nürburging to raise awareness.

There has been a about 1 h documentary on German TV, because some politicians were/are involved and a lot of tax money is lost.

On a positive note Donington looks like it will recover from incompetent management - maybe the 'ring will too.
