The dreaded water pump

Hello, so finally have the funds to move on to timing belt and water pump change. I was shopping in eurocarparts and as they have a discount at the moment, was wondering if they sell the new style water pump rather than the old one? (I have a 1984 model year, and looking at the documents looks like the pump has never ever been changed)

Part No.: 201330041 in eruocarparts

Hopefully these comes with a guard rail. As I understand I will need a new pump gasket, thermostat and roller for it?

Deutsche Parts on eBay USA seem to have new water pumps for under £100 delivered - I've no idea if they're any good or not and if you're not doing your own spannering then it would be worth doing some rennbay research first.

Holy F*** that is cheap! Judging from the gasket part no. they are the new style pumps as well. Just not sure with the import tax and shipping time.

Def fit the new style pump! You will need to get the guard rail that goes between the two sides of the belt and the associated hardware. You may also need to modify the rear timing cover (or get a new/secondhand one off a later car).

My old pump (1992 S2) against the new one I fitted

There seems to be a few different brands of aftermarket water pumps on the market. I saw URO brand cheap on ebay but when i did a bit of research, URO seemed to be summarised as "cheap chinese crap" and to be avoided.

Is there a particular brand which the collective deems to be reliable and VFM?

Also, does anyone know who makes the pumps for Porsche? I presume that whoever makes the Porsche ones also puts the very same component out into the aftermarket under a different brand.

When I did my S2 last year, LASO was the brand to buy and Rose Passion was the cheapest place to get one...
There was also a chap on german ebay (search wasserpumpe!) but he was out of stock when I looked.
Zim's (in the US) rebuilt ones have a good rep.

Rose passion in France. Lasso pump. Myself and Rob both used these, very well made pump.

Temptingly cheap though if it checks out:

I thought this one quoted were chinese fobbed off as german.

I wouldn't have fitted that to my turbo but I would seriously consider it for a NA.

Has anyone fitted one of these?

I would say (possibly incorrectly) that this has surely got to be better than nothing!

leepox, just remember to do all the rollers and tensioners, they are the biggest failure point due to the strain of new belts and a potentional increase in belt tension.

I am a big fan of ECP but compare old parts to new before fitting as the guys tend to take for granted their computer system which is often unreliable!

911 car parts is an off shoot of ecp and car parts for less and is worth a look as it tends to show some genuine parts

their 84 waterpump is £114

I may be wrong but don't think anywhere will sell the old style pump, but if you are upgrading it probably won't come with the guard / guide plate.

thanks guys, this has been very helpful. I just need to call around garages to install these bits and pieces... probably ask them a few questions just to make sure they know what they are talking about. I have had bad experience with two Porsche independent garages already and I am starting to doubt every single garage unless they have a stamp of approval from this forum. But then again I would not be surprised to find out that you can only count the number of people with 944 know how with two hands. Really tempted to do this work myself but I don't have the belt tensioner tool and those things are crazily expensive!

You do know this club (and TIPEC) have the tool to loan out, right?

Bend the cam belt 90 degrees at the middle of the longest section, it will be there or there abouts, do not get stressed with belts as they are easier to do then a Vauxhall Zafira !

Alex re the pump, I probably wouldn't rely to heavily on the pic, would be worth calling them and asking.

That pump is a good price and if you ordered it and weren't happy or it wasn't correct, I think they are obliged to give you a refund upon return within 7 days.

I am guilty and have to say that on my first NAs I was using the 90 degree twist method. I had belts done twice by a "specialist" with the tensioner tool on better cars and on both occasions they were too tight and whining like hell!

There are some quite cheap acoustic digital tension checkers but I suppose you would need to know what results you are looking for!

We need Oli! I seem to remember he came up with a European dealer selling OEM water pumps for a bit less? [8|]

You've got me.

Yes, I bought a LASO pump from a German eBay seller called '911teile' (literally '911 parts') for EUR175, plus (from memory) EUR10 delivery to my door. So around £170 all in. It worked fine, and is on the car at the moment.

The bad news is that I have checked eBay fairly carefully and suspect that 911teile is not selling on there any more. However there is someone called 'Maria Halbeck' selling similar items, and the name 'Maria Halbeck' was the one on the PayPal account I paid into when I bought from 911teile. This link may be helpful;

They are a bit more expensive, but it looks pretty similar to me.

Oli.

So that German ebay seller is selling Geba brand. I did a bit of research on Geba and they appear to be a specialist in making water pumps for the aftermarket but they don't seem to supply to the OEM's.

Do any of the Porsche indy's who frequent (or lurk on) this forum have a view on Geba vs Laso?

My new pump from Euro Car Parts was a Geba
