The fast lane'¦ what is it!?

What is it with fast lane junkies!? Escalators in the underground, there is no one in front of them, but for some reason just because they are moving their legs they seem to think they should walk on the left. They're NOT over taking anybody!!!
& On a motorway, worse case I have ever seen by way of example - a tail back of taffic, nothing, NOTHING in the other two lanes. Woman driving a KA on the mobile in the FAST lane. "" Someone please explain this "˜fast lane' stupid culture we have seemingly developed as a Nation...

The ones that really annoy me on motorways and dual carriage ways are the idiots who sit in the outer lane at 70 mph and will NOT move over under any circs.

I just cannot fathom out what their mentality is!

Just undertake them and then pull into the fast lane and drive at 65!

Yes, it is tempting but if I did then you can be sure I would be spotted by the BiB and then I would get a talking to ( at best ) - would be just my luck!

Equally I suppose I feel that 2 "wrongs " don't make a right and that it might feed anti Porsche mentality which is out there amongst some sectors of the community.

What I have noticed that it happens much less to me in our other cars than in the 993 even though I am travelling at the same speeds ( or trying to ) - anyone else seen this?

Andrew W.

Different time and date - Audi driver "" no one in the middle lane, so he was hogging at 60. I moved into the slower lane to see what was holding the fast lane back. Nothing, nothing whatsoever. Having spotted my move he started accelerating and so I moved back behind him. As soon as I did that he slowed down again. Stupid bloke "" think he might have been trying to show his misses he was boss of the road or something! That didn't last long...

I was grown up & responsible about the whole situation, as soon as I was in front of the idiot. I had a Clarkson moment, POWER.

Worst motoring phrase ever - Fast Lane []- its an Overtaking Lane

People who should know better and keep calling it a fast lane have a lot to answer for

Too true. I'm sure the reason so many people don't understand which lane to be in is that they think the "slow" lane is for slow vehicles, so they sit like idiots in the middle for mile after mile. Similarly some people think it's the "fast" lane, and they're in a "fast" car, so they have the God-given right to be there. [:'(]

Great! I like this thread. So lets get an AA & Government rep (actually they'll probably cock it up so maybe not) and motoring organisations to campaign to get the masses to understand that it is an over "˜taking lane'. "" The Question is, where did we get the term "˜fast lane' from?

You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past. Slow-moving or speed-restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You MUST NOT drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by the police, HA traffic officers in uniform or by signs.

Why don't people relax ? There's too much testoterone on the roads. If you're in a hurry, you probably should have left earlier ....

Calm as a daisy behind the wheel. I am very strict about that. I don't do stress behind the wheel zero alcohol tolerance 12 hours before engaging the wheel, 48 hours after a heavy session & always very well rested before sitting in the drivers seat.

"¦I am therefore grateful for this forum as an arena to rant and vent and share like-like Porsche experiences.

Those idiot over taking (fast) lane hogging drivers!!! [:D]

On a motorway, is it not lanes 1, 2 and 3? Sounds beter than nearside lane, overtaking lane, and overtaking overtaking lane!!!![:D]

I Don't understand what all the moaning is about [:(]- you have had plenty of chance to perform your tricks at 70 plus in the outside lane
since the outset of the bad weather - now the snow and ice is clearing its your turn to hand it back to the idiots[:D][:D]

I've come to the conclusion 3 or 4 lanes bad, 2 lanes good...As soon as the 3rd lane is available, the concept of overtaking slower trafiic goes out of the window. People don't 'drive' cars any more. They're passengers and go for the easy option of staying in the outside lane, makeing no the effort to use mirrors, indicators and the big wheel in front of them. Just makes me appreciate early morning Sunday runs, trips to the continent & track days more

For a moment I thought I'd inadvertently clicked onto the 'Pistonheads General Ranting Forum'. [;)]

Completely agree with the thoughts on here, and here is another one that really gets my goat :-

3 lane road, me in left hand lane approaching a slower moving vehicle in same lane, in the middle is the "lane hogger" overtaking me who does not interpret that I am closing on a slower vehicle and although the outside lane is completely clear point blank refuses to move over so that I can come out into the middle lane.

I think this is the problem, it would appear that most people are now trained to "operate" a car but are not taught or understand anything about "Road Craft" !!

You've found where we've all moved to. The Pistonheads forum is now devoted to "why isn't my silver 996, with basic spec and no history, not selling for £75K" or Henry's latest flaming. Much more civilised here. [8|]

But that is one of the (many) good things about driving a 993, or indeed any Porsche, you just indicate, drop a gear or two and blast out into the middle lane in front of them. Or is that only me....? [8|]

Clyde, Easy in the Porsche...not so easy in the missus Polo Diesel.

Well that's what you get for driving one of Germany's "other" marques Andy [;)]
