So, got my first 944 yesterday. Drove it 110 miles back to Birmingham and it never missed a beat. I was expecting some fun and games with it but not quite so soon i have to admit.
Started it today and drove it out the garage and all is fine. Thought i would just check a few bits and pieces so i took all the plugs out and checked and cleaned them and took all the HT leads off one by one and done the same. Started it up again and all is good still. I then sorted a few other things out like the electric window not working and rear wiper which i sorted out.
The problem started when i came to put it back in the garage. Turned the key and it spluttered as if to start but then didnt. Turned it over a few times and still nothing. Plenty of kick in the battery as its new. I have spark at the plugs still. Funny thing is given all the turning over the plugs were bone dry still and there was no smell of petrol in the car, under the bonnet or from the rear. Does this point to the DME fuel relay and would it just stop working suddenly like that or does it sound electrical??
Its a little odd as it drove and started fine and purred quite nicely prior to that.

If you have spark but no fuel it certainly does sound like the DME relay. Circa £20 from the nearest Porsche Centre or aftermarket suppliers, get an extra one for a spare as they commonly only last a few years before suddenly going again

They can go both ways - suddenly or gradually. When mine have failed they have both gone suddenly - they just would not start one morning. Always good to keep a spare around

Cheers all, going to get a new DME from porscheshop later and give that a try. Fingers crossed.
It was all going so well, sorted non working windows, wipers etc.
A small blip hopefully but all adds to the challenge, err......

Oh yeah i agree definitely an ongoing project which is why i bought it. Its a real eye opener the way people let them fall into disrepair. Just found another good one. Drivers side window not working so checked all the switches, swapped them over etc but with no joy. I took the door card off to find that the glass is attached to nothing and is held in the closed postion with two cable ties. Nice touch.

Its a lux on a C plate. Guards red. Going to take some pics later so will post em up asap.
I have to say i enjoyed my boxster when i had it but there was just something more excitin straight away about drivin the 944. The boxster felt too clinical whereas the 944 felt more soulful if that makes sense.
Cant wait to get it to a nice condition.

Ok ive just put in the new DME relay and tried again and still nothing. Still turns over, still got spark at the plugs but the thing wont start.
Its a little puzzling especially given the thing drove back from London without a murmur.
Also i still cant smell any petrol and the plugs are still bone dry. Would this now point towards the fuel pump. I couldnt hear it doing much when the engine was cranked. Anyone ever seen that episode of fawlty towers....
....."right, ive laid it on the line for you....."

Ref sensor on top of bell housing down the back of the engine, if this is dead or not adjusted spot on the car will not start. See other post on here today about putting a slot in the cover.

Or you dont have any fuel in the car[8|]

Re Ref sensor i have Tach bounce when i crank the engine, albeit slight but bounce all the same so this would rule out the Ref sensor wouldnt it. Just trying to eliminate as much as possible.

Good news- i sussed it and got the car up and running again.
I replaced the DME fuel relay plus today new plugs and leads but still no joy. Took the fuel pipe off and cranked the engine and found no petrol getting through.
I then checked the fuses in the Aux fuel box again even though i had already. I took the fuel pump fuse out and on closer inspection it was corroded. Stuck a new one in and hey presto she fired into life again.
I can get on with the other stuff now. Joy to the world!!

hi mate i did say have a look at the fuses.glad you have sorted it.i was going to come round a sort it for you .but your miles away from me.good luck with your motor...cheers carl smith
