The Generation Game ....

Never ceases to amaze me how the cynical marketing machine of Porsche pump out hot on the heels of each "upgrade" to lure you back into the showroom to part with more wonga while getting royally stiffed with your 6 month old then latest edition.

The 4.0 litre engine has been out for nearly two years, all be it in the race cars, surely you would keep your wonga dry miss out generations until it's launched or has Porsche got their buyers in some kind of induced mind set that they must follow orders .....

Porsche already have the next generation technologies and upgrades, although available now they will no doubt wait for 2012 model year for the next generation and it will continue ....... [&:]

Part of the joy of Porsche ownership is the legacy, the development over time and the quality.

What you describe is what I'd want to see in a company if I was to invest in it - which is good - it doesn't mean they pull the wool over anyone's eyes (not with you anyway!) we know where we stand, still buy the product and everyone's happy.

I would not want to own a car of a make that didn't do all this.

Enjoy what you have and live with the fact that very few can afford to keep buying the very latest versions - which is a leveller in a way, you have the latest kit this year, someone else the next.

A bit like Apple then... the second you buy it, it's outdated but they still sell and they still make profit.
With Porsche sales at a high in the new countries I don't think they'll be too worried- or concerned [&:]

An interesting comparison, Gary, and not something I'd considered before. But you're actually dead right!

I guess if enough people continue to buy them then they will keep on keeping on - and if they don't then they will stop. The pace of change with just about everything these days means it's out of date before you get it home.[:(]
But I agree the continual drip feed of "special editions" is a real pain in the whatsit.
The oft quoted "lack of exclusivity" in owning a (modern) Porsche and it's relative mass production is a double edged sword? If they only made "exclusive" cars then I presume they would have a Ferrari price tag? Anyway, just as well folk are buying new cars now otherwise in 20 years time there won't be threads on this forum telling us how wonderful the cars were 20 years ago.[;)][:D] (That's if they haven't all fallen to bits by then!)

Linked to the topic - we're currently witnessing the next generation of Porsche product, although it won't have the moniker for a few years...

- 356 Porsche Purity
- Early 911s
- Impact bumper air-cooled 911s
- Water-cooled front-engined evolution
- Water-cooled entirety across the range (the mass-market Porsches)

And now:
The Volkswagen Years

Will this next chapter make the evolutions before it more sought after in future? The answer is a very definite YES.
