The Great Undertray Debate

Got the car up on axle stands last night so I can start cleaning a few years of grime from the underside of wheel arches etc and had to take the undertray off so I could jack the car up.

After searching on Rennlist and here the above debate is still wide open, with no real conclusion about what is best.

As my car is really only a fair weather driver should I leave the undertray off or keep it on?

Answers on a postcard (or here would be better).

Ollie you're on the slippery slope.....what's all this cleaning under the arches stuff all about.


Had my car 6 odd years now and it's never had the tray fitted but thats because it has a Carlos Fandango exhaust system fitted and the bananas sit too low to fit one.

You'll be leaving your bits exposed so they'll get dirtier(?) and prone to getting damaged if you do a Des on a track day. (But judging by all the cleaning that's going on it may not see a track)[;)]

Don't know about that, at Spa last year I picked up two nice dents on the bonnet after a 993 Turbo spun out in front of me into the kitty litter. Donnington also saw some further stone damage to the front of the car after a few kind owners took short cuts across corners and deposited a load of crud on the circuit.

I just like my RS to look clean [;)]
 
Another consideration is how many trackdays you intend to do, since if you remove the undertray, it allows better cooling to the rear cylinders.

tray off gives bit more cooling , not sure whether it spoils aerodynamics. One thing for sure , tray on keeps your engine cleaner , especially the alloy bits that tend to corrode. I saw Jason's car up on the ramps at ninemeister before it was Jasons , that seemed to have been run with no undertray and it looked a bit rusty !

cheeky bugger.......a little bit of rust never hurt anyone the're not made of stainless steel you know........I can't remember thinking, as I blasted around Oulton and into Druids yesterday, "I hope the underside of my car is nice and clean...." [;)] [:D]

Take it off and hear the stones bounce about.....it will feel even rawer...


Edited to say it doesn't look the slightest bit rusty at all now anyway....but I've also got the bill to prove why[;)]
 
I read somewhere recently that the aerodynamic effiency from the 3.2 to 964 improved by something like 40 to 32 and that most of that was down to 'below front bumper' and underneath so bear this in mind if you need more speed on the long stretches
