The Knowledge on 996 Turbo 'S'

Guys,

I'm contemplating buying a 2005 vintage 996 Turbo 'S' tiptronic and was wondering what to look out for condition wise.

Are there any recalls etc that should have been carried out ?

It would be useful to hear from owners with decent mileages on their cars to see how they are holding up.

Not too many replies !

I collected my 996 turbo S from the factory in April 2005. I have just completed 100,000 miles . So I think I know something about this car.It is a car of genius, but, it is not without it's foibles. The ceramic brakes never fade, there is no brake dust so wheels are cleaned with a sponge in 10 seconds. There is no brake dust to corrode the suspension . I have not yet had new pads or discs. Wheel bolts corrode faster than a Yamaha, but, that is a generic issue.
Fuel consumption is 25mpg or 22mpg if you go mad. The car eats radiators, so far I have had four, all covered by the extended warrantee, as has EVERYTHING else. Hovering out the grills makes no difference they rot. I use Bridgestone SO2 tyres, they let go very progressively and last. Pirelli give good grip, but then let go too fast for me, they don't last and are very noisey. Michelin are good but wear fast. The big tyre issue is that they often need rebalancing between replacement AND the suspension geometry has to be reset quite regularly. OPC at Reading is good the technicians there know their stuff.
Had the first new clutch at 96,000 and a new turbo . The turbo was replaced under warrantee. Never rely on the hand brake, it comes off on cooling, always leave it in gear even on the flat!
Nothing has broken, fallen off or split.

Most of the factors are relevant to everything in the 996 range and will give you a good basis to start with.
The only other thing I'd closely consider is the state of the ceramics. They are over £2,700 to replace each, but most replace with steels.
The ceramics when brand new are a light speckled grey with a glassy finish. The more worn they get the more dark patches they have and the glassy finish looks rougher.
 
Before I bought the turbo I thought that I knew how to clean a car. I didn't. John Drake showed me how to use Zymol products on one of his visits to the club Headquarters at Morton in Marsh. Car looks new, I definitely don't pamper it, I use it every day. Zymol protects it.
Car build quality makes Aston and Ferrari look like junk, engine is bullet proof as long as you always use Mobil 1.

Come to think of it, very cheap motoring too.

£100k purchase/100k miles = £1/mile.

Still worth a pretty penny too I bet.
