The Long Farewell

Guest

New member
Well the time has come - the weather is dismal, my tax is up and the 944 got its final farewell with a "spirited" drive from Galway to my homeplace in Donegal. I took off on my own at 5am so that I could have a decent run in the car before the winter layoff. She said goodbye to her playmate "Faye" on the beach at Spiddle the day before

The Gap - I'll just say I kept that pace the whole road home and I am not making any apology for it BTW

And its in for the winter [:(][:(]

We are lucky enough over here. No cameras and at that time of the morning all the Gardai are all fast asleep or dodging and hiding. I had a terrific time with the car this year. The high point being Silverstone... Roll on next year ...! [;)] we have a "trade plate" so If the weather is fairly decent she will get a few runs out over the winter.

This was last Monday and already I am gutted. My focus is good transport but just dosent feel the same as the '44.
It feels a part of me has been cut off.... !

Anybody else laying up their '44 s over the winter or am I alone in this malpractice [:D]

With the weather up here, I'd have to lay it up all year round "¦

I long ago gave up on keeping a garage queen. I drive it in all conditions!

No need to apologise, an indicated 80mph is probably about 70mph. No problem with that, Mcnulters is into 3 figures before he leaves his driveway to pop up the shops :ROFLMAO:

I am really gutted now thinking I was seriously breaking the law.. Speeding and using the camera. [:'(]

I was feeling so "unclean" as well [:D] Looks like I am at the lower end of tarmac terrorism...! [&:]

I'm jealous. I seem to only get time for the grind to and from work these days. I'm ashamed to say that last year I only clocked up just over £5k miles[:(]

80 is not really trying! Double it and I'll be impressed! (I know that 160 is more than most 944's will do, but it's a figure of speech, OK!)

I'd be more worried about the red warning light on. Brake pad sensors?

We all know that story Oli.[:D]... I think I might have a bad connection or sommit. There was a big shower of rain and it started after that..... There is plenty left in the pads as I changed them about 12k miles ago....

Thats on my to do list this winter along with a load of other jobs like the cruise control (never worked right) and getting the engine bay tidyed up (its really grubby [:'(]). She could do with all the pipes being replaced as these are showing signs of age.

I took Nicks advice and I am going to go through her and get everthing sorted out... Prepare yourselves for loads of stupid questions from me........[:D]

Donal,

Sorry - I'd forgotten it.

All the best with fixing the problems. I envy you enormously having the time and resources to do that. A garage to work on the car in, the luxury of other vehicles to drive .... and the time to tinker!

Hope you get to the bottom of them. Ask away on here when you get stuck - you know where to find us! [:D]

Oli.

Thanks for that Oli...! You lot have helped me bucketloads in the past..... I would have been totally lost and depressed without this forum..!

Dont be envious ... The garage is small and 165miles away, and I have to plan my time to work at it like a military mission.. plus the fact my wife has a veto which she will use to curtail my "playtime". Thomas now rings me when my wifes at work for he knows that him and "Faye" are as welcome as a f**t in a spacesuit. It makes me feel like I am having an affair but my wife is going to have to get used to the fact that my "mistress" is staying and she is going to have to share me with my 944 [:D]

I was looking for a 944T speedo showing 159 that I had a pic of, but it was my mate's photo and I think I deleted them all from my computer, so how about this one? The location remains a secret.

Erm, which one, Fen?

I've seen 145 on the speedo of my S2, but don't really think it was much above 135. In my experience, older speedos tend to over-read a smidge, and subsequent tests with a GSP suggest that it is a good 10mph over at (an indicated) 120.

Not telling where it happened either!

Oli.

That's weird. If I edit the post it looks like there is a pic attached, but it isn't displaying. Oh well, try again...

Hmm. 135mph is the highest I've had mine read "¦

What's that digital readout where the boost gauge usually goes, Fen?

Not sure why you should feel sorry about letting it rest away all winter long.
There are people who have no alternative than using their 944 all year long.

This reminds me that even after nearly 8 years I have still to take my S2 back over there. The only limit it seems on Donegal roads is nerve and talent. I remember about 10 years ago driving along the road from Carrick to Killybegs and 2 guys in an Escort went past me. 5 minutes latter I spotted their car on its side in a bog, the 2 guys where ok but looked somewhat perplexed at what had happened.
