If the narrow body car has more delicacy and balance to its handling, and lots of people say that they drive better with a more predictable change from grip to drift/slide if fitted with the 17" wheels with the 255 tyre. That's not to mention the ride improvement and rough road manners with the extra shock absorption of the tyres. It must follow that an S model with 18" wheels and 285 section rear tyres would be a bad idea even if Porsche did it. Outright grip may increase but the limit will be harder to feel as the sidewall will not flex much first to give you a warning and the rough road manners are not good. Fitting the 265/35/18 tyre from narrow body 18" equipped cars should yield an improvement? No problem with abs as the rolling radius will still match the front tyre size.
It seems to me that this is a good idea???

When I bought my nb 993 at around the time the 996 had just come out. I read a lot the road tests on the 993 and the 993s, lots of tester said much the same as you have, that the wide body 993 is a much rougher bumpy more twitchy ride especially on poor roads than the 993 narrow body model.

So as you said fitting the 265 35 profile tyre would seem to be the way to go, probably would not look as good though, as the 285 tyres do fill the wheel arches slightly better.

....as the 285 tyres do fill the wheel arches slightly better.

particularly compared to winderrad wheels/tyres!
