The next 718 will be fully EV

Lots of chat about this on the internet today, and it all seems to be based on one article. We know the 992 911 was designed to be a hybrid by nature of its overly large gearbox so I think the whole story may potentially have some "issues".

However, based on the Mission R that Porsche showed recently I can totally see a two-seater EV coming in the not too distant future which will form the basis of the GT series race cars. I doubt it would be called a 718 though and it may sit alongside the 718 and 911 series' for a while, although the upcoming GT4RS and Spyder RS would seem to be a last hurrah and signal the end of the line for ICE 718s.

My guess? The new EV will replace the 718 but it won't be called a 718 or a Cayman it'll be something new. The 911 will continue as an ICE car as long as it can, including hybrid technology if required, and will die when ICE dies.

That's pretty much how I see it, I would imagine they push on with ICE in the 911 for as long as possible I also think a lot of lobbying from the likes of Porsche with their investment in synthetic fuels to sway some of the directives within Euro 7.

Although if true I'm feeling much better today about my GTS 4.0 purchase, maybe the last NA Cayman/Boxster Porsche do.

That's exactly the reason I *had* to get a 718 GT4 allocation as I knew the writing was on the wall for NA engines with manual gearboxes in the Cayman platform.

The push for pure EVs makes no sense to me given that we don't have the electricity supply or infrastructure to support them for everyone, hybrids are surely the way to go until hydrogen fuel cells are sorted.

I can’t believe that I started a comprehensive discussion on this topic back in March 2019 and there’s still nothing concrete about the 718’s replacement!

At this point it’s a bit of a no-brainier that it won’t be an ICE car and I guess that 2025 would allow sufficient time to develop a full BEV … provided they start now!

Yeah, it's odd isn't it Jeff? Very little info out there on the replacement for a car (981/982) that first appeared in 2012!

Strange indeed Dave, but I suppose Porsche have a history of slow development evolution … think about the original (proper?) air-cooled 911 where very little happened for decades! Different times now though with VAG directing activities.

Still we wait!

Jeff
