The Orange Peril and Waxoyl

OK so I'm using it more....and yesterday went out on a midlands region run into Welsh Wales and got it really dirty....crud city.....On the clean up I did the best job I could with the wheels on (but they're going to have to come off!) but I'm really interested to understand how best to clean the underside/arches thoroughly to ensure I minimise the occurance of any rust.

So has anyone seen any rust on RS especially given they have no underseal and does anyone have any experience of Waxoyl or other such treatments to minimise its onset?

Also I had the rear arches undersealed and painted to minimise the stone rash occurances detailed in a previous post and that seems to have worked well yessterday dispite some fairly regular chirruping from the back as what sounded like most of the hard bits of powys peppering the rear underside of the car?

thx

My Club Sport has underseal + waxoyl. No rust.

Would have it waxoyled if it wasn't already.

Don't do much mileage, but it's no garage queen.

Suspect most RS's pretty well looked after - don't see many rough ones in any case.

and mine is pretty clean andy and no rust that i've seen anywhere....jsut want to use it and keep it that way......so did you have the underseal and waxoyl done....because I think I'm right in saying the CS had no underseal as standard?

As an owner of classic VW's / Porsches, I'm always fighting the rust issue.

I would never recommend Underseal. All the really badly rusted out cars I have seen usually have had underseal applied at some point. The problem is the underseal dries out & cracks, then it traps water between the metal work & the underseal.

Waxoil & similar is superb. Apply before the winter season & after the winter season. Get it injected into the body stucture / doors etc too.

I know this is alittle off subject, well just alittle i have never used wax oil or under seal but instead use Smoothrite, every year i take the wheels off and clean the inner wheel arche's wish bones, brakes etc and re-paint with dark blue Smoothrite, the callipers with bright red VHT paint and the engine tray in aluminum paint. although most people never see it, its as clean under the car as it is on top with the yearly comment from my MOT station "Son you've got to much free time on your hands".

Most of the UK CS's were factory undersealed, as mine was.

Previous owner had it waxoyled, but I would have done so myself, had he not.

factory 'underseal' ( more like anti-stonechip) & off the shelf underseal are like chalk & cheese [:D] Just don't bother with the stuff you can buy off the shelf.

BUT even the factory stuff does become brittle over the years & can let water behind it.

I get a good look under every RS that comes my way and I've only ever seen rust in areas that have come into contact with the ground at some point. This is likely to be because the paint and galvanised layer have been removed.

The only areas I've actualy seen it is the underside of the front boot floor and in some cases the base of the odd jacking point where someone hasn't been that careful. Maybe I'm a bit sad but I prefer to see them without anything underneath and just the factory finish.
