The other sort of booster....

Hi all,

Not having any of those small, wriggly things called children, I've not really been paying attention to the new child seat rules. I have, however, had calls from people who are unsure about the new laws and how they affect our cars.

If there are no rear seat belts fitted, what's the law?

Is there a recommended booster seat that fits assuming you have belts?

Thanks,

Hi,

Having 2 of the wriggly things myself I have been doing some digging on this and I am still unclear on what is correct. I have just been reading the rules on this site:

http://www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk/campaigns/childcarseats/childcarseats.htm#13

Section 14 talks about there is not need for boosters if the seat conforms to UN ECE Regulation 44.03 (Not sure if our cars will be new enough to stand a chance)

Also secion 18 says that if there are no belts fitted then 3 years to 135cms can travel without a restraint. My 1986 944 only has lap belts so does this count? The answer is I dont know.

Either way I am not happy in looking for ways of avoiding the law, I'd rather get something that fits so the small ones are as safe as possible. I have been thinking of "modifying" child seats to make them fit, along with various other ideas. I have e-mailed a number of campanies asking for clarification/suggestions but alas I am no further. If I find anything useful, I will of course share the wealth.

Final solution will be leave kids at home with the missus and go out in the car with mates instead [:D]

Hi Paul

I had the same problem with the wriggly things and came to the conclusion that the official Porche child seat is about the only option. I looked into the possibility of adapting a less expensive seat but it wouldn't then meet the E.U. regulations in as much as it not being tested in it's modified state.

I see you are from my old stomping ground, I moved away from Stevenage 30 something years ago.

I'm a bit p1ssed off at this. We've never used rear boosters in the 944 as the seats are effectively child size anyway. Our 8yr old is 136cm tall, so not an issue.

There is a comment in the general chat section that confirms rear seats in a 996 don't meet UN ECE Regulation 44.03, so I have to assume the 944 has no chance. Our 5yr old therefore legally now requires a booster in the '44 - I think that would compromise his seatbelt position as opposed to optimising it.

My missus has done some digging on this and so far we have only found 2 suspects for seats that will fit without modification to the seat buut will require me to put traditional 3 point harness in the rear.

Graco Comfort Sport (Am told Graco make the Porsche ones)[FONT=verdana, geneva"]Recaro Young Sport[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I cannot confirm this at this stage so I am off to some shops tomorrow morning to try and find someone who stocks these and see if they fit. If anyone knows or think they know of any others I would be grateful so I can have a look.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Hi Kevin: I doubt Stevenage has changed much in the 30 years - just added a few more roundabouts [:D][FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Off Topic.

Hi Kevin: I doubt Stevenage has changed much in the 30 years - just added a few more roundabouts [:D]

I went back there 2 years ago, arrived in the dark after a 200 mile drive and had the devils own job find a way to the Old Town where I used to live.[:D]

Hi there,

I have spoken to my local dealer who say the only porsche seat that may fit is:
Porsche Kid Plus Seat : 955.044.801.02 £186.21 inc vat
But they cannot be sure and would like me to take the 944 down there to try.

Unfortunately I can walk or drive at the moment following after sspending most of the night in A&E so I wont be taking the car there for a while. That'll teach me for plying football [:(]

As my first wriggly thing is due to require its own seat from late November I have been keeping an eye on the child seat posts. The Britax ranger 9-15KG with backrest 15-36kg without backrest as booster seat is supposed to fit in the rear of a 944. I believe it is for diagonal belts though but the booster part may work with lap straps. There were some posts a long while back about fitting 3 point belts, IIRC there is a company that advertises in porsche post who can offer advice / belts.
