The perfect 996 C4S?

New member
First up, hi everyone! I'm new here. Hope I'm posting this in the right place.

I fell in love with Porsche cars after buying a Cayenne almost by accident when my Range Rover expired. Also recently drove a Panamera which was awesome. Cannot believe what I've been missing all these years! Have my heart set on buying my first 911 and really love the look of the 996 C4S which feels to me like a future classic. Am I wrong?

Anyway, I'm currently looking for a well sorted "mk2" 996 C4S with a budget of around £20k (manual or auto - no preference). I was wondering if anybody had any tips on what to look for / avoid? What mileage is too much? Can I buy a 100k+ miles car without a rebuild and expect to enjoy trouble free (light) motoring for a few years, or am I dreaming? I understand the issues with IMS/RMS. Anything else I should look out for?

Hi Rickrock,
As a 996 C4S owner i would thoroughly recommend this car. Buy wisely!. Condition and service is king in my opinion over mileage. Get a full inspection done and then you will have peace of mind. Good luck with search. it took me over a year to find mine but speed yellow or guards red was my colour of choice and not too many come up for sale in these colours

Hi,
For 20k you should find a fine example of C4S .Be patient ,buy wisely and you should be ok.
Best advice is if you see a car you like mileage wise history wise spec colour and so on,
get it checked at a PC or a good indy .A couple of pounds for a check could save you lots of money and heartache.
Look for full service history and bills to back up.
Issues are IMS / RMS but don't even get me started on RMS we had a new C4S that had 3 seals done .One at 7 k next at 10k and the last one at 12k all done under warranty but be aware.
Other issues are Front Rads & A/C Condensers and rusting discs on the insides a problem to be fair which affects many models.
Probably the worst is bore scoring so get a bore scope done on the check also check for over revs but again this can all be done on a check.
As said buy wise from a club member or a good dealership.

Hope that helps

Happy Hunting & Good Luck.

Thanks Graemebennett - Ideally I'm after a seal grey one. Hope to find something as clean looking as yours! ;)

Yes, I read about the front rads and a/c. Also read some horror stories about bore scoring, so it sounds like an inspection is the only way to buy with peace of mind. Looks like my next job is to look into pre-purchase inspections then! Never had one of these done before so I'll need to gem up on how to go about this. Thanks for the advice! I'll be sure to post pics of the car when I finally find it!

Hi there

There's a good one just up the road from me

Its black with sunroof 2004 and its only done 22k miles from new !!!!!! in excellent condition. - I believe its a manual and has just been serviced.

The chappy is selling it at £22,995 - absolute bargain[8D].

If your interested he's just off J25 on the M1 in Derbyshire.

Happy motoring (once you get one) [;)]

Cheers mate

Rickrock,
I am new to PCGB too. I bought a C4S last year and before purchase I had an inspection on the car including a bore scope check. Front rads, rusted brakes and a few minor observations picked up but nothing major. Really pleased with my C4S 996.2 in Polar Silver and it was under £20,000.
Check out http://hamiltongrays.com. He is an independent Porsche dealer and normally has a selection of cars.

Thanks David. Yes, I've heard about bore scoring so will definitely request this is checked as part of the ppi. Glad to hear your purchase went well. Can't wait to find "my" car! ;)

Hello Rick, Have you found one yet? I just bought a C4S yesterday (well, put a deposit on it, will collect it in a week or two). I'm switching from TVR to Porsche and only joined the club last week. The one I have bought is a 2003 C4S with 52k on the clock and looks to have been really well looked after. Its a special order Polar Silver with the Metropol Blue interior. Dealer is putting an RMS and clutch into it, along with a couple of other minor jobs. We're going to be putting an endoscope down cylinders 5 and 6 and see where we go from there, but I'm keeping fingers crossed that all is OK. Its had an oil change every year except 2011, and covered about 4,000 between changes. Fully stamped up book and plenty of receipts. Really looking forward to getting my hands on it! Good luck, Jonathan

Sounds great Jonathan. And a very accommodating dealer too by the sounds of it! I'm still looking for my perfect spec car but hopeful the wait won't be too much longer. Would love to see a pic of your new pride and joy.
All the best,
Rick

Hi Rick, OK, here goes.......

The photo doesn't do it full justice, as the colour is much better looking in the flesh - It is Polar Silver which has quite a Blue'ish tinge to it, I like it anyway!!
Like you I had a perfect spec I was looking for, but compromised on a few things based on condition, as this one seems very clean. I almost went for another special order colour which looks FAB - That's Slate Grey. Cameron Sports Cars (near Bath, just off Jct 18 of the M4) have a very nice '02 C4S with 74k on the clock. It is being serviced/prepped at the moment and is a nicely specced car for £22k. Slate Grey/red belts/stainless door treads/white dials/memory seats (not winged, but still look good). Happy hunting. Regards, Jonathan

Hi Richard, thanks - I just need to sell my TVR now! Would like to keep it but limited for space in the garage. If you know anyone looking for a mint low mileage 450 Chim, point them in my direction :) Cheers, Jonathan

Truly a thing of beauty in Speed Yellow - possibly my dream car in my dream colour, but staying blue (in more ways than one!) for the time being.
