The 'right' 996 derivation?

I have had a Boxster for a year now (my first Porsche), and at some point intend to upgrade to a 996 as / when funds permit.
I have been chattting with fellow PCGB 996 owners and the consensus seems to be that if you can afford to, you should buy the facelifted 996 model of c. 2000 / 2001 model year vintage, which I am led to believe used a larger engine.
What I want to know is, do other members agree, and if so can someone please confirm what the earliest version would be, I am guessing at 2000, X reg, 3.6 litre engine.
Replies / advice welcome.

The 3.6 'facelift' 996 models were introduced for the 2002 MY, the first cars being registered in late 2001 (51).

These models are better in a number of key areas, but you get what you pay for. A really nice 3.4 can be found for c.£40k. Most 3.6s would start at £45 -50k.

At least I know where the goalposts are and I also know that I will have somewhere to put my bottle of orange juice!

In case anyone is looking to sell theirs now, pleaes note that I do not expect to be buying for a few months yet.
