the right exhaust

I going to get my 993 varioram ecu remapped and before it's done I want to replace the standard exhaust.

there's so much out there I'm bewildered - roock, cargraphic, mods to existing, fabspeed etc.

I used to have a 993 with a factory fitted tequipment engine sound kit on it - THAT's the sound I want! does anyone know which exhaust will get nearest to that sound? basically don't want to get too intrusive but sound a bit more agressive when I'm on large throttle openings...

if the exhaust gives a couple more bhp then is a bonus.

I have just fitted the Robin Sun / Carnewal RSR exhaust and it sounds brilliant[:D]. Not too noisy, just that lovely burble and when you hit the LOUD pedal - it's excellent.
If you're in the North West region you're welcome to listen.
As an aside - if you want a set of exhausts identical to the RSR's - just let me know - as I HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY!!![8|]

Thanks Graham

I got the same reply from another forum so probably gonna go for it. Just before I do, there's no increased resonance at low revs is there?

Cheers

No resonance at all. Inside the car the sound level increase is very marginal, its only when you drop the windows and go through tunnels / underpasses that you hear it.
The noise certainly turns heads[8D] - but its not too harsh.

I heard Grahams exhausts for first time last weekend , you will be impressed they sound fabulous !!! [8|][8|]

I had my car on the rollers at JZ the other week, so that they could do a comparison between the stock exhaust and the RSR's, the before and after were both after my chip.

Very disappointingly I have lost 9bhp at the top end with mid-range torque also down slightly in the mid-range. Stve reckons that you cannot better the stock exhaust for power, only sound.

Might swap out for the JZ boxes at some point, but I do love the sound my RSR's make.

That is dissapointing, I'd be gutted. I think it's about time aftermarket exhaust manufacturers claiming bhp/torque gains were forced to supply dyno comparisons on a dyno that was nationwide accepted as accurate. Somrthing like this would be acceptable.

That's interesting Poon - coz after much (much!) research I've come to the same conclusion. I've decided to: Fit Tequipment engine sound kit at OPC for the sound and then take it to 9M for a remap for high octane fuel and leave it at that.....

will let you know how I get on...

It's worth remembering that after market exausts only really perform if the ECU is remapped to suit. That doesn't mean just a 'standard remap'. If a car has been remapped (properly) with 'performance' boxes, the performance will drop significantly if the original boxes are put back on.

I recently had new boxes and a modified cat put on my car. We put it on the rolling road before the remap and the power dropped by around 10HP compared to standard. After remap we made useful gains. If I was to put the original boxes back on I expect it would be pretty poor.

It is also worth noting that the remap took some time as it needed lot's of tweaking to get just right.

Good point, this is something backed up by Colin Bennet at 9M. Basically whatever you do you would ideally want a 'proper' remap afterwards.....

For what it's worth, i had JZ M put a Roock exhaust, whilst remapping the ECU and adding an air box... the sound is awesome, and the performance is much better.... again as mentioned above, it was all done in one go by JZ..

i highly recommend it

I bought a Roock exhaust for my Boxster S but nobody mentioned a word about remapping the ECU [] Is this because I didn't add an air box ... The only thing JZ told me before buying was they would guarantee I wouldn't lose any power unlike most other systems people chose to fit.

I must say my car sounds superb and goes exactly as it did with the factory sound killing set up [:D]

I have opened up an RSR box and so know what the modification is! I am currently having another pair of boxes modified with a variation so as to improve the pressure drop in the discharge gas flow. It will be interesting if this also claws back the missing 9 BHP.

Just got to this post, Graham. The results that you come up with will be very interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing them.

And hats off to poon for making that rolling road result public -- I for one was just about to go for a set of RSRs but I have to say I won't do so if it means a loss of power.

JP, would love to know what that Roock install by JZ cost, if I'm not being too nosey!!

I had my recently departed 993 re-mapped by 9M and in conjunction with a Fabspeed exhaust, achieved 310bhp. Can recommend them. Incidentally my Fabspeed exhaust is for sale on e bay if interested.
