The Ultimate Rebuild - Continued

Hi everyone,

After being asked "What Happened?" at club night, decided to do an update...
Well after lots of cautious initial drives and a lot of oil changes(about 56 litres..) it has settled in really well. i do have a couple of noises that i cant shake(will explain in next installment) i have been using the car every day since xmas and now planning electrics, suspension and brakes in prep for next engine....

will try to do something weekly in an attempt to create some traffic on our region...

pic is of engine just before install

everyone is great cheers Nathan. I do actually already use flickr, but they have just pulled the "your trial period has expired" routine so i am now restricted to 200 photos...

I,ve managed to kill one of my noises though which i,m really pleased about:

It was valve clearences...i,ve re adjusted them about 4 times and it still click clacked, so i got the dial guage on it the other night to discover .16mm on number 4 and similar on all the others(intake). What i did find odd was that after i had left the engine for the best part of the day, those clearences reduced...i would have expected them to increase as the engine cooled? anyway, i,m going to try backside method next as i think it will give me a better result than the little tool or dial guage(dial guage is too fiddly)

for now on the intake anyway i have just done it by feel. next weekend i will go for it...

Nothing on these cars can be taken for granted [:D]

I don't do valve clearances myself. I have a neighbour that is a mechanic although with my 3.2 I am maintaining the FSH.

The clearances must only be checked cold, there is no warm setting like normal cars [:D]

Quick update on the backside method - loved it...i hadn't realised just how close the difference between too little and too much was(around an 1/8th of a turn).... I did find however that my previous attempt was way too tight. I have a bit more noise again but decided that that is what they sound like...and that's that.... Lots more to fiddle with....

Heating:
Mine was rubbish, mostly because the motor above the hand break was not working, so I've changed it for a Club Sport version(handles - why they though a motor was better I will never know) as part of that purchase I also bought some new guide tubes. The new ones have nice aluminium ends and are made of a clear pvc - the old ones huge reinforced cable outers(rusted) and steel ends(also rusted). I think both of the new ones weigh less than one of the end's from the old setup. I also need to invest in a couple of new flapper boxes(rusted), anyone seen any made out of something other than steel?

My current problem is that the diagrams don't show how and what connect the new handles to the heater cables - any one out there able to help?

ooh - discovered second noise, it's the fan bearings - third question: has anyone tried using a 964 fan on a 3.2? Wondered if this side exit design would be a nice way to loose the engine blower?

cheers
Alex

The only disadvantage with the manual control of the heater flaps compared to the thermostatic motor would be when sitting in traffic as there will be too much heat compared to when moving along, I think you would have to keep adjusting them. I like the thought of weight saving though [:D]

My heater blower in the engine compartment burnt out once and I replaced it with the same part. Be nice to know if you come up with something else.

My 911 sounds quite tappety but I think it always has, no worse than my push rod Ford Fiesta!
