The useless ashtray

Since the storage space in the 944 is rather limited, I wonder if there are aftermarket conversions available to replace the ashtray with a smaller storage compartment or else?

I have removed my ash tray and replaced it with a piece of carbon fibre but while it was there it was used for storing small things like dead dash board bulbs and redundant self tapping screws.

I'm not aware of a replacement bin type part. You could cut out theash tray lid bit and spray the base or cover it with vinyl or leather. That does sound quite good, I'm tempted to do that myself. [8|]

I usually keep a fiver in there in case of emergencies like credit card doesn't work (ahem) or run out of petrol .
The best thing I reckon would be to construct something that would accept a plugin cup holder .

Prestige parts offer a drinks holder and tray that replaces your armrest cassette holder but unfortunately stops short of the ashtray. An iPod fits in nicely and I would like to place my iPod there and run the cable under the central tunnel to the head unit.

yeah thats a good idea. Or a cellfone as some of those now have large drives for MP3 playing .

I polstered my ashtray with some burgundy(as the interior) fabric..looks nice from in+outside and is very practical to keep some parking coins or whatever in there...

I live very close to a toll bridge (Eynsham) so mine are used to store 5 pence coins in.

I use mine for it's intended purpose [:D]

Just a thought but to add to the suggestion of cutting the lid to leave just the lip around the outside, take a wander round your local 'normal' scarpyard & see if you can find a rubber insert from another car that could be cut to fit inside the metal tray. If you're lucky you might find a coin-holder (moulded into the rubber) or something.

The plastic lid can be removed by gently lifting the passenger end (the end that doesn't open) & sliding the cover off. Insert new rubber bit, cut out the sliding door sections & tidy up with a dremel & slide the cover back on (or glue it on if the tabs have broken).

This may not interest most of you but ashtrays in perfect condition are rare, broken ones are two-a-penny from places like PH sportscars so if yours is perfect consider getting a broken one to experiment with.

Thats really gonna be useful when your on the limit at Gerrards and your Maccy D coke disappears into your passengers lap................[;)] [:D][:D]

Seriously though I use the ashtray for my digital tyre pressure gauge, some pound coins for tolls and parking and chewing gum etc.
