Thermostat replacement, Coolant system failure

So my 6 year old 718 cayman recently went in for its 2 year service.
When it came back I took it for a spirited run and after 30 mins a warning I never saw before came up on the dash.

Coolant system failure, contact dealership, service required.

After a brief moment of panic I slowed up and made sure the engine temps looked ok and they did, so decided to drive home steadily.
Later I decided to check the coolant to be sure. Coulnt see any at the bottom of the pipe so cautiously filled until it did. Took at least .5 litres, maybe closer to .75.
I thought that was a lot, seeing as its just been in for a service. Phoned OPC, wasnt pleased. They apologised.

Anyway, take it for a drive a couple of days later, about a 90 mile round trip, no problem.
A few days later, take it out again, after 30 mins or so the warning comes back.
Phone OPC to bring it in.

After a day or so they get back to me and tell me that the thermostat has corroded connection and needs to be replaced, plus some other bits and bobs in order to get to it, and a coolant sensor bracket, as its loose.

I did a search for this issue on a couple of forums and didnt get any hits on this issue, so I post it here for general knowledge and any discussion.
Its the first thing thats gone wrong with the car and wasnt a cheap fix at OPC, but thats to be expected :(

There are a couple of folk on the 718 forum that have had the same issue mainly on the 2.0. Solution is a new thermostat and water pump.

Hopefully yours is still under warranty and the cost wont come out of your pocket.

Dan.

Sorry to hear about your problem Neil and thanks for sharing here.

Unfortunately no vehicle - no matter how cheap or expensive - is immune to component failure and if you don’t have any form of warranty it hits you in the pocket! The concerning thing is that it seems the Porsche Centre didn’t pick up the low coolant level during the service, something which should have been checked. What are they doing for their extortionate £200+ hourly labour charge?

Jeff
