Things to look for when buying a gen 1 turbo

Hello All .


Now maybe this has been posted before and if so I’m sure someone will be quick to inform me !
I’m currently looking to buy a turbo , I’ve been looking at a few online and now feel ready to view some ??
what advice would you all give me ?
I have never owned a 911
I enjoy driving my wife’s boxster S
and love my 944 turbo .
so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In a nutshell corrosion, especially the condition of the turbo’s, coolant and oil pipes/hoses.

I have already read these , I really just wanted advice from owners / past owners
of what to look out for , if that makes sense.
 
I've owned mine for over 8 years and added 42k miles in that time. It's now showing just over 91k.

The key thing is to establish that the service history is correct and that all oil changes have been done to schedule i.e every 20k miles or 2 years. A lot of low mileage cars haven't.

If serviced to schedule everything should be ok, whatever mileage is showing, but a lot of age related items such as suspension bushes and coolant hoses will need checking. Tyres, disks, pads and rads are all quite expensive so check that they all have plenty of life left in them. I'd also want to know how old the battery is and whether the MAF sensors (£1300 a pair) have ever been replaced.

There's a massive difference in asking prices which is generally governed by mileage. I've examined loads of low/average mileage cars in recent years and certainly wouldn't pay a big premium for a car that's not been used regularly. Condition (inside and out), history and the state of consumables are far more important.
 
Definitely Turbo's for corrosion. My car with 40k miles on required a new turbo due to a large crack which went around the circumference of the body. its not just the price of the turbos but the cost of all the attaching cooling pipes and hardware which will be corroded. Two new Turbos and fitment plus all new pipes and hardware will be circa £10K.
The more you read on this issue the more of an issue it is on the 997 TT. The negative i had was that the car felt no different after parting with all that cash. My issue was found during a spark plug replacement. The mechanic found a dark line in the rusty casting which was the crack.
 
Then theres the plastic elbows and coolant pipe issues if your unlucky

im half way through engine out cooling pipe pinning & plastic elbow replacement as well as all hoses/pipes gaskets and orings.
