Thining about a 968CS

Hi all im currently selling my track based seven and I am thinking about a more practical car. The 968 seems to fit the bill. I will be looking at the cheaper models such as LHD and non MO30, general sub 10k cars (is this wise?)

Does M030 make that much difference in the the driving and how much premium does it demand. I also saw a CS for sale without the hardback seats was this an option and can you still buy the origional hard back ones. ?

What are the major (cost wise) service items to look out for.

Thanks in advance for any comments, are there any buyers guides around ?

M030 does command a premium and is fairly rare - and not really worth it as there are arguably better more modern aftermarket choices for suspension, such as KW. The comfort seats that you probably saw in that CS were the option, hardback buckets were standard. The buckets are excellent for track use but many reckon they are a bit of a pain for general driving. OEM buckets are hard to source and are pricey.

Sub 10k cars - these cars can cost big money to put right, so spending a bit more on one with excellent mechanical maintenence history is probably a better bet. James Scott at Recaro is selling his CS with KW suspension for £12k - it sounds like an ideal car for you. I do like the 968, but at that budget you may be better considering a series2 944 as opposed to a Series3? As David states - cheaper ones usually need work carried out to them....

10K would get you a vgc turbo, either with mods or with money-to-spare-for upgrades. "Matt951" just bought an immaculate black Turbo from my Good buddy Stephen ~ full sports leather interior, FSH, M030 with new dampers and dyno proven 330bhp. Don't know the exact price paid, but it woul dbe in or around your budget figure.

mik is possibly right about the 968 being a series 3 but do consider that it is the next generation of the front engined cars and is the culmination or last development. I've had 3 944s and 3 968s and I wouldn't go back to a 944 unless I had to sell the 968 for financial reasons. The S2 is good,

Don't get me wrong ~ If I could have had a similar spec & condition 968 for the same money as my S2 I would have. [8D]

The intention wasn't to argue that S2 is as good as S3 [;)] ~ simply that with a 10K budget the former may be more attainable than the latter. [:)]
 
Hi thanks for comments so far. The car will mainly be a second car so I would ideally want the hard backs as the mileage I do in it will not be huge. I guess I could try and get some other seats but non origionals just wouldnt seem right. How much is the KW suspension to buy and fit ? as I would keep the car for quite a while and slowly do bits to it.

PS the "Recaro" car looks good but I am trying to be strict about my budget shame really.
 
Im quite new to Porsche, does Adrian have a good reputation as its a 450 mile round trip for me ?

As far as I am aware he has an excellent reputation and deals mainly in 911. It does look excellent value and seems to have had all the major checks done. It would be worth getting the calipers looked at to make sure the plates are not lifting.

If the clutch is original that will probably need doing soon and I would get a compression test carried out to check the head. The suspension may be getting a bit tired but if you are going to use it on the track you would probably want to upgrade it anyway.

Well worth a look but get a specialist to check it out (or there may be some other 968 owners down that way willing to go with you).
