Thinking about buying a 2000 boxster tip, any advice

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, although not entirely new to Porsche, ( had a 944 a few years ago) just thinking I'd like to have another Porsche, am considering a 2000 tip 2.7 with 47K FPSH, was wondering if there is anything special I should look for. I've read about the oil seal leaks etc is there anything else? In my younger days I had a multitude of sports cars from an MGA to a Lotus 2+2, TR4, 944 etc, now above all I want reliability. I can do most DIY stuff as in my 20's I worked for Rob Walkers as a mechanic, now I'm in my 50's I don't want to have keep tinkering as I used to have to do with the Lotus's every weekend.
Will I be able to get in and out with looking a total arse?

Any advice would be very welcome, thanks.
 
Check the brakes. They should be fantastic - if no then check the inside face of the discs - it could be the owner washes the car and puts it away for weeks at a time... which means the brakes corrode on the inside face. They cna look fine on the outside but be shot on the inside!

Solution (for when you own one) is to take the car for a short run after washing it (spin the water out of the brakes and get some heat in them), or just drive it every day [:D]

Hi Tim. I've had my 2001 2.7 Boxster for a year and a half now. I paid full whack buying from a dealer in Glasgow, who turned out to be a real dodgy guy, so my warranty was meaningless, so that's the first thing. Dealer= warranty. I have since had new front discs and pads, and bottom arms. If you get any clunks from the front end, watch out for this. They have phosphor-bronze bushing which wears out...very expensive. Check the a/c works. Mine cost £440 to fix, 2 new condensers plus a recharge. Also the air mass sensor went, it's £175, meaning the car was quite sluggish to pick up. Also, if you don't get one with PDC, I had it retro-fitted, around £250, a great asset with limited rear vis. Check all the warning lights go out after start. If the engine control stays on, it's the air mass sensor, don't let them say otherwise. At 2.7 ltrs it's nippy but not blisteringly quick, but a hoot to drive especially with the top down. So there you go, £1800 and all sorted.Good luck! Caroline. Nearly forgot, I also spent about 90 quid from a company in Hong Kong, via Ebay, on HID headilght bulbs...worth every penny. Fantastic light and look the business!
 
fantastic, thanks Caroline that good to know, just had the front track control arms done on my BM, rubber bushes though, about £220 for both sides, how much for the Porsche?
whats a PDC?
 
Hello again. The control arms are £98 each, plus fitting and VAT. PDC = park distance control!!

Hi there Tim,
Maybe too late for you now but another thing to check for is that the engine auxiliary polyrib belt must be changed at 48,000 miles. Worth asked for that to be done by the Seller before you buy.
