Thinking about buying a Cayenne

Hi Guys
excuse this intrusion from a 911 devotee but thinking about a 4.5 Cayenne for a daily mile muncher. Just test drove an 03 4.5 S tip with air susp and PCM in a dark blue. Quite impressed with the drive. Can you help me with a few things;
  1. Any specifics I should be looking for. Checked the usual, all electrics ok, no scuffs underneath, no leaks form diff etc.
  2. Still worth an inspection I guess?
  3. How much approx would a porsche warranty be? Dealer (non Porsche) is offering 3 years for £750 AA Gold but it is limited to 2K per claim.
  4. How does the air suspension work? We could see any tangible difference in ride height whilst playing with it.
  5. What mpg should I expect. On the test drive I reset the mpg computer and returned 24 though a lot of it was cruising at 60-70 mph. I do quite a few business miles so need it to be nearer 20 than 15 lets say.
  6. How does £27K sound for an 03 Cayenne S with 41K on the clock. Full PMDSH, Bose, air susp, PCM, phone, electric seats, heated seats.

Thanks for your help.
Neil

As someone that made the jump from 911 ownership to a Cayenne, I would say go for it. I have really enjoyed the car and on motorway journeys get about 21mpg and that is in a turbo, so the S should be much better.

On the warranty side I would get a Porsche warranty purely for peace of mind. Have had TP warranties before and they have not been worth the paper they were written on
The air suspension is operated by 3 buttons - comfort, normal & sport and the ride height is determined by the silver push lever which takes it from loading right up to off road and there is quite a difference in height.Check that all the ride height sensors are operational and that the bellows system is fully functioning.

£27K sounds about ball park and it does have the right options.

Good luck.

William you're doing better than me!! I only average about 21.7 in the V6!! you must be very constrained.

Neil having made a leap from a boxster to a cayenne I can still say that whilst a tough decision I would go for it. The Cayenne is fantasically underrated car capable of things most sports coupes (nevermind SUVs) aren't. - I must point out that I still miss the boxster but now trying to convince the missus that the second car really should be a 911 and not a 3 series!... anyway back to the point
  1. Any specifics I should be looking for. Checked the usual, all electrics ok, no scuffs underneath, no leaks form diff etc - I would definitely get it inspected by OPC
  2. Still worth an inspection I guess? - Yep OPC worth every penny and you can't do OPC warranty without an inspection first
  3. How much approx would a porsche warranty be? Dealer (non Porsche) is offering 3 years for £750 AA Gold but it is limited to 2K per claim. - last year my 54 PCM module decided that it couldn't navigate it's way out of paper bag, replacement PCM ordered from the fatherland, car collected, new PCM fitted and car returned - cost to me £0 - warranty cost over £2k! I renewed my warranty this year at a cost of £895 incl VAT which is the same for a C4S 911
  4. How does the air suspension work? We could see any tangible difference in ride height whilst playing with it. - I agree with William you should be able to see the drop or increase. I can't remember on our model years but on the new cayenne the maximum drop is 54mm, but as this is a loading facility it's only available when the car is stationary, but 54mm is big enough that even on a car of this size you should be able to see it. The first setting is manually selectable and lowers the car by 24mm and the second setting lowers it 34mm but happens automatically at 210ish kph. more info here and use William's very useful notes http://www.porsche.com/uk/models/cayenne/cayenne-s/indetail/chassis/
  5. What mpg should I expect. On the test drive I reset the mpg computer and returned 24 though a lot of it was cruising at 60-70 mph. I do quite a few business miles so need it to be nearer 20 than 15 lets say. - you should be ok with that it's well known that the "S" returns the best MPG all round, but watch the right foot, if you drive it like a 911 i.e. hard then it's going to hit - one of our guys on another forum had an "S" and very rarely saw the other side of 20 and even saw as low as 6.9 on a very spirited day through the welsh countryside
  6. How does £27K sound for an 03 Cayenne S with 41K on the clock. Full PMDSH, Bose, air susp, PCM, phone, electric seats, heated seats.- sounds like good value (wish i'd paid that)
Hope this helps

Gary

(now what did I come on here for again?)

Just sold mine, but on the topic of fuel consumption, my S got better as the miles piled on. Overall, over 60k of ownership we averaged 19mpg. Not brilliant, but the performance was used regularly!

Thanks all. Pick up my nice 53 plate Cayenne S in the gunmetal grey with matching grey interior tomorrow. Head versus heart again, heart wins out every time. Not a sensible purchase (thanks Mr G Brown) and by the time Ive paid for it I expect it will be unsellable but at least I'll go bankrupt happy :) My only worry is the stigma of running two Porkers, gives a very wrong impression of my income!

Thanks for the advice.

[:D]Neil ..... good choice, most people get the wrong impression about your income if you drive any Porsche!!!!!

On a 53 plate you won't get stung for band G car tax though, if the DVLA web site is to be believed.

Enjoy

Nice one, great cars very underated,i love mine and for every day i wouldn't swap it,recently drove it to Switzerland and back, car is comfortable, stable in all conditions and plenty quick, when i returned to the carpark after a week it was literally buried in snow, scooped my way into it,cleared the windscreen, let it warm up a bit ,locked the 4wd and pulled out of the snowbound carpark on standard tyres everyone else was on chains and winter tyres, these are such capable allround cars the doubters don't know what they are missing, enjoy your new car you made a great choice[:)]PS I forgot to say, when you hear one pull away from the outside they sound very burbly,i love that[:D]
