Thinking of a few more changes

I have a standard steering wheel with airbag that im thinking of changing for something a little more sporty. Bearing in mind the horn is in the steering wheel is there an obvious replacement part that will house a horn for MOT purposes as well?
Anyone had the engine chip at JZM? Chipwizards is just too far to go.
Sportier seats for my car? I have standard seats which are ok for eeryday driving but garbage for track use.

What you need good sir, is a 993 rs steering wheel(leather) ,around 160-200 plus vat last time i looked ,complete with mounting boss/ hubspacer and horn pad/push from your local friendly opc.A small adapter for the steering column stalk(£10-£15) is required to convert from an airbag set up to the rs non airbag unit, and one wire requires repositioning within the block connector on the column stalk to facilitate the horn operation (the horn loom is normally contained within the airbag "spiral cable " housing which would on an airbag set up mount between the steering wheel and the column stalk assembly.
Oh and a 2.5 ohm resistor to plumb in to the airbag loom to fool the control unit into thinking that the airbag is still there and keep the warning light out and the passenger airbag active.
It sounds a bit of work but when you have done a few it's less than a hours work!
if thats too road car for you then the dished momo mod07 /porsche motorsport wheel (suede) is the most rewarding wheel i have ever used in a 993 ,but it's a bit full on racer in appearance!
Might i suggest that a good seat to compliment the wheel will make you think that you have changed your car, in terms of driver communication with the chassis and overall involvement. something along the lines of a recaro pole position or an spg .

Great tks CJ. Actually I spotted the RS steering wheel on Design 911 I think it was but will look at seats. Any experience with remapping??

It is along way to go to chipswizard....but he does not install an off the shelf chip.....he maps infront of you .....checks a host of other things too......and will even take into account your personal preferences etc etc ...a bespoke service....

Well worth the effort....and you get to enjoy the drive back !!!!

best thing to do is go and have a chat with steve or jonas-they are both very up for a chat, especially about 993`s about which they know a lot!!
they seem generally more interested in bigger tuning projects but they may well be able to help-let me know if they do as i may avail myself!!
they do of course offer the 12hp chip for around £500 but it is just that-a chip-and it would be easy to spend several thousand on upgrades with them

Nope -

He bypasses the ECU using a laptop - completes power runs on rolling road - adjusts - another power run - checks other parameters - asks about your driving style etc etc - tries different options - more power runs etc etc

You will be in there for a min of 4 hrs !!!! before he eventually burns an EPROM to install

Its a good day out - long - cold - but good --

Take flask !!!!!!

In answer to the chip question,David ,I would make the trip to wayne schofield at chipwizards because he has the reputation for being the best around. But make no mistake you will have to use the best fuel available all the time to gain any real advantage with the parameters that he modifies. I think that i will eventually have a remap completed and if and when it would be with Wayne. Unless that bargain 993 turbo motor comes along complete and i create a narrow bodied gt2 But...................
I would say go for the remap when you have done all you can/need to the suspension /brakes/wheels/tyres and the controls (wheel/ seats etc) then spend some on some driving tuition and i would bet that you will be substantially quicker then the man next to you with the remap.I have seen it time and time again at the circuit ,people giant killing with low powered saloons and hatchbacks on sticky tyres with a bit of skill upsetting everybody with safe quick laps.Power is a very small part of a "quick car" road or track.

+1 for that cj!!

after 2 hrs personal tuition at beford and 4 hrs at silverstone i was much quicker and slicker through the corners

still not fast though[:D]

Yes all very true chaps. Have spotted some rather cool leather recaros but am a small bit worried that they may look a bit "chavvy" in my standard 993

Don't hesitate David ,Get them bolted in pronto .You will not believe the change that will occur to the drive!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.s as with all things quality these recaros will hold their value long in to the future ,so if they are not for you then you can always get out of them without pain! And leather recaros do not come up for sale very often ,or is the problem they are black and your interior is marble grey/cashmere/???????

These would be new seats IE not original items so are freely available. Also will they limit access to the rear seats? IE will they tilt forward?

Well yes, they will but it depends how practical you want to be. The recaros will not tip but they slide a long way forward and because of the slim shell design they actually provide more legroom for a child in the back.I hear many people say that what happens in an accident? you wont be able to get your child out quickly ? I can tell you when that situation comes along you wont find a seat a barrier you will be in there like a shot as any parent would. I have seen a pair of recaros in a 993 with two children in the back at the same time,It's not a problem ,and when it's time to decamp, just slide the seat all the way to the front and they will come through the gap between seat and b post! or i f they are very young 2-4 yrs then they just come through the middle over the center console.
Soft luggage is no problem to fit in to the back either.

Crikey !!What is this, twenty questions!
Er um well ,i am not sure what they will cost but recaro pole position /spg in cloth are around £450 plus vat each might even be plus runners ? For a leather version i think you will add half to two thirds of the new price again (Yikes!)
Check around on the net but its hard to find a leather price i think.
Hope this helps
P.s Do not under any circumstances sell your old seats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You must be able to put that car back near to stock when you sell or it will be a tricky sale.

Haha very sorry Just trying to gauge general 'upgrading' costs after already spending just short of 3k on suspension and working out if different seats will make a significant difference as well. All advice greatfully recieved :)

David,

Just before I sold the 944 I put sports seats in (bought from eBay, reconditioned and dyed to match the car, just to tidy it up) - I still regret not taking them out and swapping them to the 993. Compared to the standard seats they really do improve the driving experience. If you're at all brisk through the corners with standards then I'm sure you'll find yourself bracing against the transmission tunnel, door panel etc., none of which is conducive to smooth driving. If you've done the usual suspension, brakes and driver training I'm sure you'd appreciate the outlay on seats.

Why not buy a cheap sport seat first and try it out? Doesn't take very long to fit. Or find a willing owner to let you have a go!

Cheers/John

I know exactly what u mean re cornering. Now I have the upgraded suspension I'm spending more time slumped against the inside of the door on bends!!!
