Thinking Of a GTS

MATTYBOY

New member
As my 911 nevers seems to get used any more due to the kids growing and with the arrival of a dog, I have been thinking of having a change. After some scary px offers from other marques, I went to my local OPC to see what they would offer, and whislt there had a look at a Cayenne GTS in the showroom.

So can you good people give me the reality of running one of these. I commute approx 80 miles a day mainly motorway at a cruise of 80ish - what kind of mpg can I expect? (it will be a tip)

Any 'must haves' from the option list and anything to avoid - + other info gratefully received.

Thanks

Matt

[:D]Matt, I've had a couple of GTS test drives at club does - it's a great bit of kit, handling is quite simply the best of any 4X4, bar none. Not sure how the alcantara interior will stand up to a dog though, if leather is an option go for that along with SatNav. As for the economy - mid twenties is probably the best you'll manage.

Best regards

Paul.

Matt,

Good choice looking at a Cayenne for lugging around kids, dogs and it being your daily drive however referring to your commute I would not opt to go for the GTS. The GTS is a fantastic car (don't get me wrong) but her fuel consumption is worst of all the Cayennes (including the CTT). I have colleagues in PCO (Porsche Club Oman) who are averaging 15-16 MPG at most. The GTS manual has a higher final gearing ratio, meaning that I would do 1800 RPM at 80MPH and the GTS would do close to 3000 RPM. Also the ride is far harder (great of course) but for the longer commute air suspension with PDCC is a must. Yes you can get the GTS with the aforementioned but you might as well go for a lower spec'd turbo.

If you don't want to spend the money for the CTT, I would go for a nicely spec'd S and the essentials are (IMO) PDCC, panoramic sunroof, SatNav (obviously), autogate, light package, side blinds) don't go for non smoking kit (what I did) as you will end up with only 1 12v socket tugged away in the passengers side (out of reach if you want to use it for gsm charging etc), also the rear view camara is a gimmic and TV you will never use. Make sure that you get a 2009 car as this has PCM3 what is much better than the old out dated PCM2.

Guess what I have[:D]

Cheers,

Mark

Why does it have to be a GTS ?
My "S" just about manages 20 mpg.
I ask the question because as soon as you leave the OPC the value will drop thru the floor.
My car with only 25K on the clock and owned from new (First on register) is only valued at £15K according to my local dealership.
At that rate I would go for this type and save Loadsa and you will take a long time wearing it out ? ? .

Thanks for all the info chaps - going for a drive on sat - have asked to try air and steel sprung cars and then to try an S & GTS to compare, I am waiting with baited breath for the 'outstanding' trade in offer on my 997 [] (this is going to hurt).

Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks

Matt

When you drive the air suspension one .. note what size tyres it has on .. if its 20's the ride will be "rougher" than an air suspension with 19's

Also when trying it in the various modes (Comfort, Normal, Sport) also make sure you try Normal Height and Lowered height as well - so 6 combination of settings to try

Above 78mph whatever setting the height is in the car will be at low setting
doubt you will see it on a test drive but above 130mph it knocks another 10mm off

I drive mine on UK roads in Low / Comfort pretty much all the time

Just thought i would mention that with steel sprung cars the ride quality in the back is really bad-hard as nails[:'(]I would love a GTS they look luverly...(bet i end up with the new diesel though[:(])

"S"06MY(with very stiff at the back steel springs, next time i want air ride)

Thought i'd chip in as i am in a GTS whilst my useless turbo s is hopefully accepted as a lemon and we are allowed to walk away from it:

It makes a good noise on startup
The red is growing on me
It's much better on petrol than the turbo

The 21's are really noisy around the speed limit
There is no height control, which is great for the speed bumps. Although i guess this could be added
It's costs quite a lot - Given our current market I would guess there are lots of deals out there e.g. there are two s's sat outside a bmw garage round the corner from me for 16k a pop

cheers
Alex

My "S" is last of the old look MY06 with high miles now(55k[&:]) its worth very little now almost too scared to face up to it,i think the strategy will be to do starship miles in it and get some use/value out of it....

What is up with your Turbo S?

keeps cutting out(well restricts you to 3500rpm) ...happened to wife on slip road about a month or so ago and she quite rightly is refusing to drive it!! Dealership haven't got a clue and have had several chances over the last year to get it right.. now in hands of solicitors and very angry wife!!! i think it is just one of those cars that was wrong when it left the factory, the problems have been non stop:

Noisy tappets caused by faulty tensioner
drive shaft joint felll to pieces
two steering bearing sets
reversing beepers stopped working(for two weeks then started again)
rear glass door button stopped working
it's been flat bed'd away three times because of this intermittent fault where they have
replaced coils
flashed ecu - which from what i understand only had a security update in it!!
Replaced GearBox - which we were told would certainly fix it!!

We originally had a Cayenne S which was great...

Occasionaly I take a look in the Cayenne forum(spend most of my time in the 3.2 section) and i'm not alone, there seem to be a lot of faults with these cars....

I am soooooo dissapointed, it was supposed to take us up to a panamera, but i suspect that sale will go somewhere else now...I wish Porsche had stuck to the same values that built my 3.2, I'm now at the mercy of a franchised dealership who only cares about the bottom line rather than a good relationship with a loyal supporter....

Appologies to MATTYBOY for going completley off topic and having another rant...

cheers
Alex

Whilst I feel for Alex and his experiance with his car which I do not doubt or debate..

I do have to remind every one that IMHO most of the stories we get on forums are sad ones ..
