Thinking of buying 996 TT

Hi all,

I have seen a high mileage early 996 Turbo on Henry Firman's website. The car looks in good condition, and has 138k miles (2000 car).

Apart from have a PPI done, is there anything i should be on the look out for?

The price is obviously the main driving factor for me.

Any ideas or comments are welcomed!

Thank you!

It is a very good looking car for the mileage, and the price doesn't seem too bad taking that into account. The engines are very strong in the Turbo, so I don't think that is too much to worry about, as there are a few posts on US forums from people with relatively trouble-free 200,000+ milers. Turbos and wastegate actuators can be troublesome, and expensive to fix, but those are the sorts of things that may have been replaced along the line. I believe there is a comprehensive history file with the car, so check it out thoroughly. A PPI is a worthwhile exercise. What would be nice to get done on a car like this is a cylinder leakage test, but it is a marathon to do on a Turbo, as you have to remove the rear PU and intercoolers to get at the plugs.

There is a huge thread on Pistonheads about this car - or more specifically someone with a chip on his shoulder trying to trash Henry Firman. I have never dealt with Henry, but spoke to him briefly at a race meeting a couple of years ago. He gets very good feedback from most places, and seems like a genuine character to do business with.

£3-4000 extra might get you into a decent 60,000 miler in a private sale, but it's all about budget, I guess.

Can't really comment on the car but I did buy my 996 from them, it was Tom I dealt with. I found them very helpful and reasonable to deal with. I got mine inspected by Peter Morgan who did a great job.

Thank you for your comments.

Richard, i have seen that forum thread on Pistonheads, it is highly amusing!

I will keep you posted as it were!

I would ignore all the drivel that is on the pistonheads website I trawlled though all 9 pages, except that is the opening remarks about mileage which I think are fair just opposing points of view.(I know Zero H he is a porsche turbo obsessive and makes a fair point)
The guy who sold the car to them gives a precis of his car around page 7/8 I think, he sounds like a honest geezer
I have had dealings with 911V before they really helped me with a bit of bother I had purchasing a car( not from them)
and they didnt take a penny piece Tom ,Henry's brother was a star. if they had a car I had been intetrested in I would have bought from them
911V can do dme readouts they have the piwis but they are honest lads,go tickle that fancy you might be pleasantly surprised
