Thinking of buying a 924 - Need some advice

Hello everybody,

I am looking into the Possibility of swapping my 1970 Land Rover for a 924 2 litre manual. The insurance works out at about the same for me (As a 20 year old Mechanical Engineering Student) and I can do most of the work myself, and I hear that spares prices are very reasonable due to the shared VW group parts.

I have recently driven a 944 Turbo (Briefly, about 1.5 miles) and absolutely loved it, especially the driving position. I have sat in a 924 and was similarly impressed however I have never driven a 924.

So I am looking for any snippets of information or advice about buying and owning a 924, whether you can buy in Scotland or whether you have to buy from further south, what the fuel economy is like, and so on.

Also, if there is anybody around Dundee that has a 924 or 944 that would be willing to take me out for a drive so that I can get a feel for what these cars are like on the road, I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you in advance,
George Mayson

Hi George,

I would recommend speaking to the Register Director of the club, Paul Hedges, (look in the register section for his email and number)

MPG - low twenties normal use, 30mph on a run,

gumtree, ebay, pistonheads all have cars for sale, but whatever car you look at, get it checked over by a porsche or even VW specialist so that you have a real understanding of condition.

Prices of the 924s have risen sharply over the last year or so but the 2 litre is probably the cheapest end so possibly better car for the money.

There are a couple of guys on here in region one that have 924s, both fife area, Archie Seath and John Hunter, I expect they will both be at the Scottish Concours next month so perhaps an opportunity to see the cars and speak to the owners, (17th July),

regards
Scott.

I have owned 4 924's a 2 litre lux, a Series 2 Turbo and, currently 2 2.5 924S's. They have all been special.

924 lux. A great entry level Porsche. Simple to maintain. 100 mph+ 30mpg. It was not a rocket ship and the brake leave a little to be desired. To be fair I was running a 911 2.7S at the same time so it had a lot to live up to.

924 Turbo series 2. Now that was a rocket ship. It was quicker than my 911 held the road like a limpet and the brakes were superb. 32 mpg on a run and The best car I have ever owned.

The 924 S's The standard one is quick by 1986 standards, reasonable to maintain, 35 mpg and a joy to drive.
The other one is used for events, it was a PORSCHESHOP project car.

Thank you everybody for getting back to me on this - it has been greatly appreciated.

I'm delighted to say that yesterday I picked up my new 1983 944 2.5 lux, I prefer the shape and the insurance was cheaper than a 924! John and Archie have both provided me with valuable knowledge, I look forward to coming along to meetings soon!
