ok here's the deal. friend of mind has 85 944 in great condition with 90k on it automatic tranny. Asking only 1k but there is a catch...it's got a rodknock. When he changed oil about a year ago he forgot to check for oil gasket and oil leaked out . now it has not been driven ever since this mishap. car is in great condition except for teh rod knock.

now my questio is is it worth getting the car for this kind of price fixing it up and then selling it ? i am hoping that all it needs is rod bearings what woud they cost(no labor just parts ill be doing all workmyself)?
oh eyah and another question....how dificult is it to get to the pan to replace rod bearings? i never saw what 944 looks from under the car.

thanks a lot hope to hear a lot of coments
PS
i was planning to keep the car untill i found out it was auto and for me thats a turnoff so i am hoping to sell this car make some money off of it and then get a 5 spd 944 or 951.

Hi Alex, getting the sump pan off is aparently a real pain, but if you've got the time then take a look at http://www.clarks-garage.com/ in the Garage Shop Manual there is a procedure written for just this titled 'Oil Pan Gasket replacement'. Allow 8-10 hours []

Call Bert Gear at http://www.berlyn-services.co.uk/ for price of parts and any other advice. He is the Club 944 technical rep and has helped most of us (or flogged us the parts anyway [:D] )

Autos are not that much in demand I'm afraid so I would guess it would not be worth much more than £2500 in absolute tip-top condition (purely a guess)

sounds like a nightmare to me, the auto will put off just about everyone. It is possible to get running 944's for ca £1500, save your money and get the right thing.

great thanks a lot! that tech service site reallly helped and gave me an idea of what needs to be done.

does anyone know what currency for USD is? i woud be paying .9-1k USD for this car
and reallly hoping i could sell it for about 2k USD. intersior and body is in excelent condition like i said and he has a lot of service records. "front end" service has been done , stuff like timing chain ans so on. not sure about water pump

any more coments?

PS .does it really take 8 hours to replace the pan....i read whole thing and it seems like 6hour job or so what's teh hardest to do

Sounds like a better idea to break it than fix it to me TBH.

Have Clark's Garage taken down the pdf files of the workshop manual? The hard disk I had them on died and I can't find them to download again.

Do you mean the official Porsche workshop manual? I've never seen that on Clarks, only the links to his homewritten 'Garage Shop Manual' - they all seem to work fine at the moment [&:]

Hmmm, I had some pdf files that I downloaded from somewhere that are the workshop manual I believe. I never used them TBH but I'm thinking of having a pop at rebuiding the turbo engine myself since every time I get some cash together it seems to have to go on something else.

I wonder where they came from then?

Actually I have Vols 1 (inc 1a) to 6 on another drive now that I look. Is that all or am I missing part of it?
