thinking of getting one

hiya

i'm now seriously considering getting a 944 as a second car but the missus says i have to do my research first. its a car i always wanted as a kid - ever since primary school and getting a lifts in one off a classmate's dad who was a footballer.

after spending quite a few hours searching i'm struggling to find a comprehensive model history and a detailed buyers guide - any pointers where to look?

basically i'm in search of help and information....if somebody could give me a run down of the different engines that'd be great. a list of standard equipment for the different models would be most useful too as woould any changes in body styles/diiferent bumpers etc. as the bodies are galvanised, is rust really not an issue on these cars or are there prime areas that i need to look out for? also i'd like to see pics of the pre & post facelift interior?

i realise i'm asking a lot but i havent a clue and i guess you have to start somewhere!

kind thanks in advance

oooo lastly can you get a set of golf clubs in the boot?

durrrrrr just seen the useful buyers guide at the top of the page - cant belive i missed it.

still it doesnt answer all my questions so if anyone could help?

If you look through the forum you should be able to find out alot that you need to know or there are a few books avalible that detail the models through the years, the best one i have is classics in colour porsche 924 & 944 by nigel edwards as it puts the early and late cars side by side but im not sure if its still in print or not. Personally i would go for an oval dash model either a 2.5 lux or turbo depending on how much you have to spend ,i wouldnt have the 16v s but others may disagree !!!

blimey thats more than i can get in my bm! thanks carl

is the oval dash much different from the earlier one? whats wrong with the 16 valve engines? would love a turbo but i doubt my budget can stretch that far. there seem to be a few nice 2.5 lux's for my budget (ÂŁ3 - ÂŁ3.5k) - will i get enough of a buzz though off the 8 valave 25?

i want this for keeps - the plan is to over the next few years tidy it up and make it as near as mint as i can....just need to make sure i get the right car to start with.

air con seems prety rare but there are a few that have it. is the air con ok or is it just a troublesome expense like the 80's jags? also are electric sunroofs standard equipment or optional extra?

thanks

Another good book is Michael Cotton's 'Porsche 924 and 944' which gives the model history, variations etc, and includes a buyers guide.
I got mine from Ebay for a ÂŁ4 I think.

I had the earlier model followed by the oval dash type and I found my newer one less creaky and smoother.Looks more modern interior wise too for not much more money!I get a buzz from my 2.5 lux every time I drive it and I dont need aircon as I remove the roof in the summer and its great!!![:)][:)]

Go for it ! get a turbo, ive had a couple and the first one went on for nearly 200k before the head gasket went, but the running costs aren't much different to a non turbo and you get all the bits.

The early turbos, c reg i think were the first of the new look body and dash, and the 220 bhp was plenty, should fit your budget.

as for the aircon, if you find one thats been recently overhauled with a new rad ( or out and sorted) they are potentially a big bill. When they go its nothing but hot air coming out the vents, on every setting.

Look out for sticky door handles, perished boot seals and smoke from tail pipe when throttle off,

Good luck and have fun

thats a great help - thanks

so is rust really not an issue anywhere on these cars? also are there different styles of seats available as from looking on autotrader and ebay some of the side bolsters seem bigger on some than others?

ORIGINAL: Rush325

so is rust really not an issue anywhere on these cars?

Rust is becoming more and more of an issue. The earliest 944s are now 24 years old, the latest are 15 years old and most of them are driven everyday in all weathers. The common area for rust to start is the bottom of the front wings in the area of the protective 'bobbly' paint and the rear of the cills just in front of the rear wheels. It is actually more common in the later cars that have the plastic undercill skirts as we believe they allow the crud to accumulate and hold the damp.

I have got a 1990 944 soft top and you can easily get the clubs and a trolly in the boot. If not you can put the roof down and get 2 sets of clubs and 2 trollies on the back seat. With regards to buying a 944- put "porsche 944 buying guide " into google or other search engines and there are countless advice sites. Buy one they are fantastic cars if you get the right one!!
Good luck! Tom.

My car is up for sale when I can get around to it as i'm looking for a 964.
It's a August 1988 944 Turbo (220bhp), seviced and MOT'd last week with new discs and brakes all round.
Mechanically sound and good condition all round but not mint condition.
Will send pics and more details if interested.
Very good car, used daily.
I'm based in Reading.

3.0 to 3.5 k will either get you a well together 944 2.5 8valve lux with some good history which hopefully would not have any lurking horrors about to cost you money (which is why you need a pre purchase inspection) or it will get you a S2 on the bottom end of the S2 market, which almost certainly cost you money in the near future.

I currently have a customers 944 8v 2.5, in black, which he is deciding what to do with.. Its been looked after without cost being an issue for several years, has recent new brakes, has recent belts, waterpump, tensioners, oil seals etc... new power steering pump, and is pretty much mint all round with a private plate.

He is in Egypt for the next couple of years and has leased/sold his 944 turbo until he gets back, and is deciding if he should turn his lux into a track toy with an "interesting engine" either V8 or 3.2/3.4 8 valve and using it as a track toy... or if he should sell it. So if you like I can find out what he wants to do with it, as I would say you would be hard pushed to find a more looked after 944 lux.

The one thing I would say... buy wisely and as you look around say to yourself...

"There is nothing quite as expensive as a cheap Porsche"

Meaning, buy a cheap one and it will cost you much more in the long run than buying a good one in the first place.. Unless you are good with DIY, even then I think its better to buy a good one first!

thanks for the info guys.

cant seem to see that hartech buyers guide as it just appears as dots on the page.

i live in warrington and work in liverpool - if anyone can recomend a specialist thats not a million miles away that'd be great so i can find out how much a pre-purchase inspection costs.

the car i have now is a 94 bmw 325 which i'll never get rid of. thats nearly finished though now and i want the 944 to be my fun car and to some extent a project car. the 325 knocks out 190ish bhp and i'm not sure if the 8valve 2.5 litre porsche will be that much quicker. on the other hand the bm must be twice the weight of the 944 and the power delivery doesnt start til 3.5-4k revs. whats the power delivery like on the porsche? even better if anyone has any experiance of both cars and would care to comment?

so many different thoughts going on right now.

steve and jon, if you want to send me some more details that'd be great. my e-mail is Randolff23@hotmail.com

9Meister are in Warrington. OK they are not 944 specialists, but they used to be and they have only just sold their own 968 so they know their way around the cars.
