thinking of going to a 928??

Hi all, im thinking of leaving the 924 world and getting myself a 928. is there any particular model/year i should avoid and what downfalls lie ahead etc and what to look for?
 
Hi Darth :)

It really depends on how much you want to spend on which model you get...they range from £2000 ish to £25,000

The only things that give problems are the electrics...things like electric windows, boot release etc.....so when checking any 928 make sure that ALL the electrics work ,although the electrics never stop them starting or driving...

And the sound of that huge V8 rumbling into life makes it all worth it :)

Whilst I do agree entirely with Brett's comments I would add two things:
1. It really is ideal that you be ready/willing amd able to do much of your own maintenance (I speak from experience - I have to leave to others to do) unless you do have very deep pockets.
2. If you want all possible kinds of details about the 928 go to www.rennlist.com - there is not much they have not covered and simply by registering (free) you can ask your own questions. There is also a U.K. website (928.org.uk, I think) which is also very good .
In the past year I have driven everyone of the models in the current ( 2007)Porsche range (except the Boxster) and concluded that, for me, the 928 is without equal. This is, of course, a matter of taste and is not to detract from the undoubted qualities of the other cars.




 
The early 928 are very attractive and collectable but unless they have had a great deal of money spent on them recently you are likely to find them agricultural and lumbering and rather crude mechanically. Bare in mind that the early technology is over 30 years old.
I was amazed to find a central locking system on my 79 model the first in the world apparently but it was operated by vacumn lol with little air tubes going into the doors.

The electrics fuse and relay board is simply horrendous. All stuck onto a rough piece of plywood and screwed to the pass floor footwell. The single wire spaggetti linkage on the back is like a demented 1940's telephonist's exchange [:(]

All the electrical connection are the bullet type and you know how bad they are !

I'm sure a well sorted car would be fantastic but although mine had a new engine and complete respray it lumbered along on its original suspension like an old BMC truck and cornered about as bad.

The auto gearbox would only work once it had warmed up and needed 2000rpm to pull away in the mornings ugggggggh

 
Sorry to hear about your sad experience, peanut. I guess I've been lucky not to have that experience - as indicated, in my experience, handling and performance are absolutely SUPER! Of course there are the difficulties of older technology and age, but having just driven a 2007 997 with approximately 2000 mls on the clock (for about 2 days) I concluded that the 997 (C2S) was, for me, only superior in that it was a new car and truthfully, given the money to buy the 997 I would just look to freshen up the 928 !
Probably crazy, but that's it for me.

what year is your 928 ? mine was a 79 and had been extensively restored but still needed another £2000-£3000 spent on the gearbox and suspension and electrics.
I enjoyed driving it but found it was too expensive to run as a daily workcar ((150 miles per day +) and it was sitting on the drive for months at a time. I had to run it round the block every fortnight just to keep things from siezing.

I could never throw it around corners like I can the S2 or it would have been on its roof in a field on the first bend.

 
thanks guys, will bear in minf, it was a toss up between a 928 and a 944 turbo-the V8 wins all day long im afraid!!! will look for a good one at a reasonable price. Plus i want a manual, most seem to be auto??

Yes around 85% of all 928s are autos and usually manuals hold a slight premium on price...

Hi Darth! Definately go for a 928 :) They are great and provided you get a decent one you will not be disappointed :)

I have had two, the first being an 83 S 3 speed auto and my current one being a 91 GT manual and they were/are both superb in their own way. the auto was very lazy and smooth but still fast and the GT is just so much fun being a manual! I actually prefer autos because I'm lazy but my manual is an awesome drive! :-D

To answer peanut's question: it is a 95 GTS purchased over a year ago. Since then I have driven over 12k miles and it has never let me down or failed to start; it comes with a long list of options (climate control a/c; power memory seats, electric, etc., etc.) which have always and do now work (although I did have to have the a/c redone - it was cooling but not quite enough). Given that I'm over 6ft and not a lightweight either, this is one of two Porsches (the Cayenne is the other one) that I'm really comfortable in and I am happy to drive it on a daily basis though I do agree that 150 miles per day would be just a tad pricey in V-max and Mobil1. There are a lot of horror stories out there about the 928 and, I think, most Porsches (if in doubt just have a read through the various boards (rennlist and so on). My experience has been good, but I conclude, on the basis of other owners' experience, that if you want a very reliable, cheap to run car you'd better look at something Japanese. By the way, the automatic transmission is excellent and capable of being used like a clutchless manual; I do drive in and out of London so wouldn't dream of a manual. I have gone through a range of cars and none have been as much fun (this shark is addictive and makes you take the long way anywhere!). The only part which has not always been up to standard, on my 928, is the driver! Also you might want to note that Brett here is a really mine of information (right here in England) and was most helpful when most needed. I am not sure if I would recommend buying one - once you have driven one you'll be very hard pressed to find another car you will enjoy/appreciate as much! No doubt you will make the right decision for yourself...

i echo Gafton's comments. I too thought about a 944 Turbo, coming from Jap rally cars and then a TVR Griff 500. I now have an auto 928 GTS. fantastic car, and I don't miss manual one bit.

I've fitted a kickdown bypass switch for the extra snappines in the auto (thiink sports mode) and I've recently had X-pipes and RMB fitted.

Handling and brakes are sublime and personally i could do with another 100bhp, but then I'm a speed freak. ( might consider NOS one day or Supercharging)

Anyhow, go for it, you won't regret it.

You may think thats crude and out of date, but our bloody 2001 VW Polo has the same system ! (and its failed)
