third brake lights

After having a little tap up the rear end a couple of months ago I am now paranoid that at a junction or in creeping traffic the same thing might happen again. Especially since after the accident i've noticed just how low our cars are and thier rear brake lights especially for people in their Chelsea Tracktors and vans. Therefore I think that a 3rd brake light seems a good idea. I have seen the odd original 944 3rd high level brake light come up on ebay occationally but I don't like the look of the unit. Has anyone found and successfully fitted an off-the-shelf LED style unit from a high street accessory outlet??

Also would it be possible to use the other gas strut to transmit the electic signal to the light in the same way the heated rear window uses one of the gas struts as it's electrical conductor therefore negating the need for unsightly wires spanning the gap when the tailgate is open - or is the other gas strut used to complete the heated rear window circuit??

I picked one up from the Swedish version of halfords, but its a pretty generic unit (before you book a ferry! [;)] ). Its a log thin unit that DStapes to the window. the wires I tucked into the panel behind the sunroof, ran then down the c-pillar and tapped into the passenger side brake light. I'll snap a pic later in the day for you.

Sounds just the ticket. Thanks. With you being a left hooker when you say passenger side I presume you mean UK (and proper) drivers side??

I found this one on an american website for either a 944 or 968 cab and i quite like it to be honest.

I bought a Boxster third brake light which I thought I could adapt.

That was a really stupid idea[:(]

I don't mind the one like Mike's inside the hatch, but the blob on the otherwise smooth and flat cab bootlid is the spawn of Satan.

Now then Fen.. Nothing like peaking your mind......[;)][;)]
Anyone would think your not too keen on them.....

I actually got one for my 968 cab,, but after your remarks i dont think ill fit it....After all you might "rip it off" next time we meet.....[;)][;)][8|][8|]

I would respect your decision either way (regardless of how wrong it may be [:D]).[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I just class them with other appendages the American cars had thrown at them to meet Federal legislation like the big black rubber pads on the rear bumpers, and I doubt anyone would fit them voluntarily.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I've nothing against high-level brake lights in the back window. If you really want one on the cab then in my opinion the right way to do it would be to find one fitted to something else and recess it into the panel the lock sits in somehow. Not that I like them in the bodywork at all and I am considering looking for an early UK bootlid for my M5 as they didn't have them and I think it looks much cleaner than the Jap/later UK cars that did.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I like them, i also like the cab boot spoilers too.
The only criticism i have of my cabs boot is that to me it looks too big in comparison to the rest of the design.
I've also toyed with the idea of a chrome boot rack like you find on the mx5 which i really do fancy but "her indoors" can't stand them and refuses to let me fit one.
How much did the brake light set you back?

According to the option codes on the sticker the third brake light was a factory fitted option so I can't tell you the cost, although they are still available from your OPC.

I wouldnt fit both the rear spoiler and the third brake light as it's a bit counter productive[:)]

Well, I think anything on the boot looks pump. The spoiler could be even worse than the brake light I guess...

Fen,
What year is your MX5? If it should have one by law it will fail the MOT and if pulled by the law maybe another fine for the list.
Cheers,

I think thats the first time I've seen one of those. I dont think it looks too bad at all, and if it helps stop someone rearending you then all the better [:)]
