Third Gear

I had a bit of a nightmare the other day.

Driving along at 30 ish and changing up to third gear, I found that the gear would not engadge. No matter how much stirring I did, the gear stick would not go into third.

I changed into forth and when I got to the next road junction, went through the gears with no problem.

When I got home, I told my wife and she said that she had the same problem a few weeks ago (but she neglected to tell me). The car had been into Porsche for its service last week and if I had known, I would have had them look at it.

Has anyone got a clue what could cause such an intermittant problem with the gears?

Secondly (although I should do a separate post for this) I have had a 'knocking' noise come from the passanger side front for some time (since the car had 9000 miles on it) but the noise NEVER happens when the car goes into the garage (it now has 60,000 miles) and I have had all sorts of things changed on the suspension. It is very intermittant and may go away for months.

Strangely, the knocking seems to happen when the car is going in a straight line on smooth roads. Is there something in or around the glove box that could sound like the suspension that could have come loose?

Thanks as always.

I would suspect one of the clips which hold the shift cables to the gearbox. They are notorious for breaking. A well-placed cable tie usually does the trick.

The knocking is a mystery to me. If it has been doing it since 9000 miles, I wouldn't have thought it was suspension, but I have no idea what could be causing it behind the glove box area.

Thank you guys.

Porsche said that the gear is probably a clip also. They are going to do this next week.

The knocking is another thing and I will let you know if we get to the bottom of it.
