This fell off my Boxster today

Making the most of the weather, I was out for a roof down drive this afternoon when there was a loud rattling sound from, I think, the rear of the car and this fell off (image attached).

There have been some mild knocking noises from the rear for a while now so I suspect this is linked but I don't know what it is. Suspension? Exhaust? I drove home fairly slowly over the smoothest roads I could find and there was almost no unusual noise and the car felt normal.
Any ideas, anyone?

Its a spring. Not an uncommon problem.my 987 has had all 4 replaced in the last 2 years. Broken one at the front then one at the rear. unfortunately you will need to change them in pairs per axle.

Thanks to everyone who has replied and identified the problem. The car is now booked in to OPC Cambridge next week and they didn't sound too surprised about a spring breakage. After Duffy's comment, I feel that I've done quite well after 12 years! I guess one of the many potholes got me in the end.

Just an update for all those members who replied to my initial post.

I am relieved to say that everything is now fixed and the car feels rejuvenated - in hindsight the ride was getting rather sloppy and I must have accepted that everything was just getting old and worn.

In the end, three springs were found to be broken so it now has a new complete set plus a 4 wheel alignment check. Not an inexpensive week but at least I am back on the road ready for the summer!

Yes, it was a lot - £1300 worth with the classic discount applied. That's on top of two new rear tyres, a new battery and professional detailing during the last few weeks! Still, a great top-down cruise into Cambridge yesterday made me feel a lot better.

Thanks for the kind words, Tracy

What a co-incidence. Almost identical spring breakage on mine during the MK Classic tour at the weekend. Front of car sitting quite low ATM but managed to complete the course and get it home - spanners out at the weekend. [:)]
