This weekend I have mostly been...

... doing a few more odd jobs on project S2. In between the gales, I managed to get a few more things done:

Fitted a new NS wing mirror glass (£50 for new part, so I got a complete mirror off poobay for £15 [;)]

Fitted a new leather gear gaiter - was a bit of a pig to fit, but now looks v. smart.

Fitted new bonnet struts, so now I can tinker under the bonnet without it collapsing on my head []

Removed 17 years worth of alarm/garage stickers from inside all the windows (makes cars look a bit scruffy IMO), using a combination of a stanley knife blade & lighter fuel.

Then had time to give my rusty arch bottoms a temporary coat of paint till it goes to the bodyshop. Amazingly, dark blue Hammerite is almost an exact match for Porsche Cobalt Blue [:D]. At least it now looks all blue instead of blue/brown, & should give a bit of protection till bodyshop time in May.

Even had time for a quick A-road blast yesyerday afternoon. I have to say she feels 100% better after her visit to Strasse [:D]

Roll on next weekend!... Wheel refurb next I think.

Cheers,
Robbo

Well done, i always feel better after doing even small jobs (is that good English?)

Ah, thats one of my 'to do' jobs. I've quite a few to scrub off. Yes, they look much better without.

Robbo, just out of interest are you running your S2 as your daily driver or as a second car?

Good to see the progress - it's nice to see a car from the original advert and your viewing through the work you're putting in!

At the moment I'm still using my Mitsubishi FTO as my daily, but that should be going next weekend (I've already taken a deposit on it) & need the cash from that to put into the S2. From then on the S2 will be my daily (& hopefully the weather will start getting better!)

I'll keep posting on progress as I do things. I know from experience of other forums it's good to see an ongoing build thread from start to finish. I'm hoping when she goes into the bodyshop I can keep popping in to take pictures of the WIP, as it's only down the road. Although it may partly coincide with going away on holiday.

Cheers,
Robbo

I need a New Gaitor... as I didn't use the car for a week..(After the Bump) and it seems to have turned to pulp! (Do tell why it was such a Pig to refit)
Hammerite in a Spray can?
Bonnet Struts are a Useless thing unless the Engine it Warm! (at least in mine)

In only ask as I bought my J plate S2 just before you and you seem to making better progress on the the little jobs than me[;)]. But mine is stored in a garage 50 miles away during the week, so it's weekends and occasional days only for me. That's my excuse anyway....

Robbo how does the performance differ between the S2 and FTO ? always wondered how they go. FTO's are certainly good looking motors.

I have to say, the FTO is a fantastic motor! It's one of the best I've had (& I think I'm up to about 20 now - mainly VWs), It's right up there with the VR6 Corrados I've had, & for my money Corrados are one of the best FWD cars ever.

I wish I were in a position to keep the FTO, but I've been after a Porsche for so long, I really need to concentrate my efforts (& cash) on the S2.

The thing with FTOs is depending on what model you get, they are completely different animals. The majority are tiptronics, which are technically brilliant, but not particularly quick & tend to tarnish the reputation of the FTO in general. With a manual box & MIVEC (like mine), ie a GPX or GPVR they are superb - 190 BHP & weigh about as much as a bag of crisps! Accelleration is great due to the lack of weight, but they need to be revved hard to maintain performance. The noise, especially when the MIVEC kicks in is phenomenal!... very F1!

Compared to the S2, I would say performance wise they are pretty similar but dished out in a completely different way. The FTO doesn't have the sheer low-down grunt of the S2 & doesn't really pin you back in your seat like the S2 can when driven hard, but the FTO probably has the edge in point-to-point acceleration.

Looks wise, the FTO is very pretty car & really doesn't look it's age, (most people can't believe mine is 13 years old). IMO the 944 looks uber-cool too, in a retro kind of way.

Sorry, I'm starting to sound like a motoring journo now!

Cheers,
Robbo

Well done on the daily driving thing. I think that this, above all else, is the one thing that keeps my car running well - driving it a decent distance every day.

You WILL love it.

Oli.

cheers Robbo
I kinda expected it to be a high revving beast as my wife's Mazda was. It was either flat or flat out [;)] I like the lazy torque of the S2 its deceptive performance without fuss . Grown out of spinning the wheels a lifetime ago lol
