I wouldn't want an early 997.2 Turbo with 700Nm torque pulsing through its new A91 block and PDK. Those that get one I would recommend not keeping it longer than the 2 year warranty period or you might be left with a very large bill.
New engines/technology are usually pretty stable 2 years after being first introduced. So the 991 Turbo (*note 998 is not the next model number by the way) will probably be ok. I wouldn't expect before 2013 though (991 Carrera out 2012). I would also expect a 997.2 Turbo S (520bhp and PCCB standard) around 2011-2012.

Only in demo cars ie. I like my clutch too much to wreck it
Personally I think 100-200kph time is a much better indicator of how fast a car is. Obviously not a legal test on public roads though.

Alex - the GT1 block cannot last forever and it would be a sad for Porsche if they could never superceed it. Other car manufacturers bring out new engines all the time with little or no adverse effects - maybe some early teething problems which are ultimately dialed out. The only way to move the Boxer engine forward and keep up with the competition is to develop it and ultimately that means re-desiging all the component parts until at some point you have a completely new engine. The GT1 engine has served Porsche well but it is a mature design at the top of its development curve and its reliability is owed to the decades of development lavished on it. But it's time is over. Let it RIP. The new engine will be better in every way given half a chance i'm sure.

That's the thing I love about Porsches, they do what they say on the tin. Almost all other manufacturers cars fall short of their on-paper stats - Ferrari are known for this, but Porsches always deliver no matter who's behind the wheel. I've seen the results of a few V-Max type events and the Porsches usually always top the bill of stock cars and always achieve or exceed the on-paper stats.
I drove a Ferrari once, 0-60 was a fortnight - but it said 3 weeks on the tin! []

The new Direct Injection has 40% (?) fewer parts --- effectively Porsche have tried to design out the failing components.
I for one will be very interested to see how the new Caymen CS performs in what may be a new competition series ... ?

Qouted times every time with no skill required! (No wear either but I have never tried the "launch control" which I am told is present, its fast enough as it is (for me).

This topic has been discussed at length and I still strongly believe that Porsche are moving away from the GT1 engine on the Turbo for no other reason than to increase their own profits. The 997 Turbo engine won 'engine of the year' when it came out and is good for 1000bhp. So there is PLENTY left in the pot for future models.
The GT1 engine was over-engineered so much because it was used for racing. Do you think that the A91 engine will be used for racing? I very much doubt it, it probably won't be strong enough for this purpose.
The A91 engine is also connected with the PDK gearbox. The fact that the 997.2 GT3 keeps the GT1 engine and only has manual says it all to me. Porsche see the Turbo as a GT car and not at all as a track car. Porsche are effectively saying that the GT3/RS/GT2 are track cars and the A91 engine is not good enough for them. So why should Turbo owners lose out?
Lastly, my GT1 engine will certain never RIP as I plan to keep mine until they outlaw petrol powered cars! []
