Thoughts on Havoline Oils

I just wanted to get some feedback on the use of Havoline engine oil. My local Indie recently did a major service and uses Havoline X1 10w40, now called Extra 10w40. This is a semi-synthetic oil which he has used for a long time and thoroughly endorses. It has certainly lowered my oil consumption compared to Mobil 1 that I was using, although does give the gurgle on starting. I have read about oils on the forums, and am aware that this is not a recommended porsche oil. Just wondered what people's thoughts are. Obviously want the best for my car, should I change to a synthetic on the next change? Does it matter that she is about to cross the 100k mark, or that I hope to do my first track day in the summer (recommendations for a nice beginners circuit appreciated?).

Thanks.

Guess your a Northways customer as he uses this, Ray recommends semi synthetics 10/40 or 15/50 as added protection and not quite as thin as Mobil 1 0/40. I've been using him for 9 years and never heard anyone complaining of oil related issues seen pleanty related to Mobil 1 being a bit thin on the older cars. At the end of the day except for a few additives I dont think there is a great deal of difference between the decent manufactures.

I had been told that a slightly 'thicker' oil ( e.g. 10w/40 as opposed to 5w etc. etc. ) bit better for older engines...

and my 1994, C4 993 is now at 120k miles....

or is that just for earlier 911s[8|]

or just an old wives tale[]??

also - in a bid to be thrifty and save the planet - have found 10lts of VAG semi-synthetic oil, still with cap sealed tucked away itn the Garage, ( bought for my old Corrado )- think this is suppoed to be 10w/40 ( but will check with VAG )

is this potentially OK for a 993[:)], or shud it be chucked ( at recycling dump of course )

Yep, a Northways customer. Only had my first service there so far but very impressed and happy to put my trust in him. Thankyou for the reassurance Gordon, just wanted to hear exactly what you have said, after reading so much on different oils etc.

Thankyou Maurice. Obviously a sensitive issue where a well respected Indie is using a certain oil that maybe goes slightly against the grain from Porsche's perspective. One year in with my first porsche and still learning, won't tempt any more debate on this one, thanks for the views.

Jonathan.
