Thread size question

Morning all ! Quick question for those of you who have fitted harness location bolts or are savy with threads and fittings.

The bolts that hold the seatbelts (in particular to the sill) in a 944 Turbo (assume all 944's the same) what thread are they ? They have a 17mm head but I believe they're 7/16 UNF, be very grateful if anyone can confirm ?

thanks

Chris

Chris,

Never looked at the bolts in question, but I'd be (very) surprised if they were anything other than metric. 17mm head would be an M10 bolt, surely? Could it be a fine thread rather than the usual medium, possibly for more strength?

What makes you think it's 7/16UNF?

Oli.

I'm pretty sure they're 7/16. They're a standard size for harnesses across marques I believe, so that people don't use cheap metric bolts that aren't rated high enough. Just been going through the process myself and can confirm M10 and M12 do not fit! Just ordered some 7/16 bolts after Google explained why. Can report back when I try them if you want.

Good knowledge! But what's to stop people from using cheap 7/16 bolts instead?

Gentlemen, including the honourable Oliver....

thanks for your advice and input, you've confirmed what I suspected but not yet been able to confirm myself = all harness/seat belt threads are 7/16 unf - prevents me ordering the wrong things from e-bay !

Much appreciated !

Nothing, although a 7/16 bolt will be inherently strong because of its design with fine thread and reasonably large area.
