throttle body vacuum connection

I started removing the intake manifold tonight to get at the AOS and i noticed the little pipe which i believe should have a vacuum line on has been blanked off with a little bit of red rubber. Is this normal? The destructions (via Clark's) say there should be a vacuum connection on the TB but a few other things have been slightly out so I'm not sure.

Also I'm pulling all this stuff out because theres a terrible oil burning smell when the engine is running which gets worse when you put your foot down. I was told it could be the AOS seals gone breathing oil into the TB and hence engine but theres no much evidence of oil. Theres a bit of black splatter on the plate from the middle pipe which I guess goes to the AOS but not a huge amount of oil in there. The car has been sat now for about 2 weeks though so it might have drained away?

Is there anything else that would cause this burning oil smell? The head was rebuilt around 55k ago so i was thinking (hoping) it wouldn't be the valve guides.

I can't see any oil on the outside of the engine, nothing obvious anyway.
 
Are you sure its a smell of burning oil? As it might be exhaust fumes getting in through the rear hatch or the rear lights or even a missing grommet in the spare wheel well.!!!
 
Not sure on the S2, but the turbo has a vac hose coming off the bottom of the TB. Its hard to see but if you but your hand under the TB it should be clear. I 2nd the point about the boot seal, I nearly fell asleep driving my old lux from the gas getting in.

Fish a sparkplug out and have a look. If the engine is burning oil, the plug will be black and oily (as opposed to dry and a pale fawn colour, which would be the norm.)

Well, generally i can't smell it much with the windows closed, if i open the window the smell is instant. It can be smelt in cars behind too, i overtook a friend of mine a while ago and she said she "it stinks" as i went past.
 
opening a window (or sunroof) does tend to suck in the exhaust fumes if you have a leak at the rear of the car

is the area around the tailpipe discoloured?

I thought plugs that show oil burning always had a white dry coating. They certainly did in my lux when it used to burn lots from worn valve stem seals.

Yep, my old oil burning lux would instantly fill with the acrid smell of burning oil the instance a window was opened. The boot seal was almost flat on the hatch on that car.

So id definatly say the smell is getting in from the rear rather than from under the bonnet Alex.

I'm pretty sure its oil, i know the smell. Plus the car is using a lot of oil, I'm not sure how much but its way more than it should. You can stand over the bonnet after a run and you can smell it. I've got the AOS off atm, going to clean the engine off tomorrow as the area where it attaches is a mess. I'm going to replace the vacuum lines while I'm in there. Everything seems ok though, the seals are in ok condition and tbh the lines seem ok too.

I didn't know the AOS was just a hollow bit of plastic, i thought it had something inside...
The oil must be leaking from somewhere but its been into my local indi twice and theyve never reported a leak. If this doesn't sort it i'll have to assume its more serious. [:(]

I thought that white, dry coating meant over-heating - burnt oil leaves a nasty, tarry black goo which is quite distinctive.

I could be wrong (as usual.)
