Throttle problem or Fuel

Hi,

My 1990 Carrera 2 has developed an odd and annoyingly intermittent problem. Turn on and ticks over nicely at approx 800 rpm. Depress throttle upto 1600 revs - fine.
Anything above 1600rpm -say 2200rpm and then revs drop back to 1000 and then revs surge back to previous 2200rpm then drop off and surge again etc etc.
There are no air leaks, the distributor is fine new -rotor arms and distributor caps recently.
Could this be something as simple as bad/old fuel? Or any other ideas gratefully accepted!

Cheers

Hi It sounds like you need to clean the idler stabiliser valve. It's by the air flow meter. Try this and also check the micro switch on the throttle body. Tim

It does sound like fuel starvation. Has it been left standing for a long period? if so it maybe bad fuel. Around the area of the oil filter you should see a petrol filter which would be a 1st to replace. Failing this find a good garage that has testing equipment to measure the fuel pressure to the injectors. Do you have an aftermarket alarm fitted? I have a Clifford one fitted that stops the engine revs increasing if the anti-hijacking code hasn't been fitted, it might be fault from that region if so, but that would be extremely rare and nothing I've ever heard about. The other thing is to think of any work that may have been done recently that may have caused the fault to appear. Another area would be the throttle, it has a gate or flapper that opens and closes with the position of the throttle to allow the correct mixture through depending on engine demand. It may be sticking but this is an area I'm unfamiliar with and others more experience could chip in on that score. Keep us informed.

Hopefully I'll be working through the potential problems this weekend/next week as I've been away. I'll let you know how things go Thanks for the advice. Richard

Update (changed details from b9ral to scarlet)

Fuel drained.

Idle stabiliser removed cleaned

Still has problem. Working through other possibilities

Cheers

I think if the idle microswitch fails then you get a light on the instrument cluster. I have a pst-2 and that makes things a little easier to find out what is wrong!

Hi (My previous login was B9RAL)

This problem stumped me, I checked all the above suggestions. I currently have it with an engineering friend whose diagnostic software told him it was an intermittent Full Load shorting problem. But the car has now stopped talking to his software! He has a "Porsche mechanic" friend who came with his diagnostic software this morning, but car ran perfectly for him! Of course this evening it has played up once more! Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a C2 Cabrio 1990??

Thanks

Richard
