Throttle sticking???

Hello everyone.

Been doing lots of little fixes, but I suddenly have a symptom I cannot seem to stop.

I fitted a refurbed AFM which is working brilliantly, car runs so much better and burns cleaner etc.

But even befroe I fitted that suddenly the throttle started sticking open around 2,000 revs.

Now I have done the usual fix (large hammer and hit behind throttle pedal in case floor pan was kinked a little)

but are there any other causes of the throttle to stick. The cable appears to be running freely...

Does not do it all the time, but definately 50% of the time.

If I come off the throttle it will just stick open at 2,000 to 2,200 revs.
If I blip the accelerator pedal it then settles down to normal tickover speed.

We did have a guy once who many years ago had a sticking throttle and the lumphammer fix did not work. After lots of investigating he discovered the carpet (or maybe the rubber grommit) where the cable disappeared through the firewall was catching on the cable and snagging it. A Stanley knife and some trimming whilst upside down in the footwell was the cure.

Cheers Pau lI will get upside down and see what I can see.

That is more likely the cause as it runs freely and pedal action is fine,
it only recently started doing it so this could be the culprit.

yes - clarks garage has the procedure

just check it's clicking off when the throttle closes.
 
+1 for the carpet. Same thing happened to me, turned out the carpet was creeping forward a holding the throttle open.[:)]

At least it was an easy fix.

My throttle stuck open yesterday and I was on full acceleration at the time on a dual carriageway... Very disconcerting. Oh, I know my rev-limiter works OK! I had to turn off the engine and pull into a layby which was interesting as I was doing 70 and no brake servo. I noted that the butterfly was stuck open, and did so when fully open, I limped home and after dismantling the whole butterfly assembly I found that the hinge on the butterfly was sticking and so I it sprayed liberally with penetrating fluid to release it. I opened and closed it a hundred times to ensure it was fully working again. It is now a treat! It was nothing to do with the carpet in my case, and like yours the cable was free. Hope this helps...
