Thud on throttle release

I noticed today that whenever I sharply release the throttle after a quick burst of speed there is a sudden 'thud' from the rear of the car (about a second after removing my foot from the throttle pedal)...it's hard to describe in words but the effect is there's also a noticeable braking effect on the car's speed (very briefly)...

The clutch is a little heavy and I guess will need replacing some time soon....does this sound clutch related or is it a sign of something far worse?...
As there's a delay between throttle release and the thud I was wondering if it was related to the flywheel for example...

Worn drive shaft(s) taking their time to take up the slack? I guess that they have CV joints just like any other car...? How many miles have they done?

Adrian.

Thanks for the swift replies Adrian and Richard.
I don't think anything's ever been attended to in either of these areas (mileage is 73000).
Car was MOT'd last week but no idea whether these are things that would be picked up on during the test...

I will check them out though.

Stuart
