Thumbs up for Opie

Ever since my rebuild i've never been happy with the Castrol Magnatec i used. I really really wanted to use Mobil 1, dunno why just felt right. anyway, was poking about on this site when i noticed some threads from a chap at Opie Oils, the site is brilliant, I put my porsche club membership in for some discount, I chose Mobil 1(which i couldn't find anywhere else) + filter pack which all in was less than my local and it turned up a couple of days later. I've only just got round to using it, the filter didn't have a porsche logo on it and it was also slightly longer, but it fits a treat. After a while I noticed that my oil level indcator came to life much quicker from cold and i'm sure the engine is quieter...now i can here you all saying, thats because you put more oil in....but i'm a bit obsessed about oil level and consumption since the rebuild, and it wasn't that....

anyway - If you read this, thanks Opie i'll be back...

cheers
Alex

Alex have you tried Shell Helix?
I use that but have no exp. of any other type in my 3.2, just stuck to what the previous owner had used.
cheers

How do you feel about shell helix,Ive started using it but havent covered any miles since the oil change ,previously I was using mobil 1. Just curious.

Hi Liam.
I have used Helix and nothing else since I have had the 3.2.
So I cant compare it with anything else - but having said that the car does not leak oil (anywhere) it doesnt smoke or use oil either.
This is prob combination of a well mainatined car and a decent oil - Helix is not that expensive when compared to full synth oil and this Ive been told is more prone to finding ways to leak!
I am very happy with the results I get with it and would recomend it - but obviuosly the condition of your engine etc will have a play in how it performs as an oil.
Cheers
Adam

thanks adam, Im sure it'll be fine.hope im not hijackin,

Since 1991 I have used Shell Gemini and then Helix in my 911 with a 2.2, a 2.4 and now a 3.2 engine. The road car is used for hard hillclimbing etc when it is thrashed all the time. It gets laid-up for winter, but has an oil/filter change every March ready for another thrashing.

Never ever fails.

Mobil 1 leaked out of the 2.4 like mad. Changed to Helix and leaks stopped. Did that for one year only.

Bob Watson told me to use Shell.

911hillclimber - thats intersting, it would be great to find out who has leaks and what oil they use - also who has no leaks and what they use...

maybe we coukld set up a poll? anyone know how to do that?

Adam

Bob Watson told me it would happen (old engine technology etc and modern oils?) but i chose to ignore his advice.

Lesson learnt, I follow everything he says about the car...

I've been using Millers Oil XFS 5w40 for the past few years, about 20k miles with no leaks and no problem. Will be trying Silkolene Pro S next time around.

The guys at Opie are great to talk to as well if you need any oil advice or are just interested about oil full stop. These guys really know about oil, literally, at the molecular level. They are also happy to discuss the pro's and con's of different brands of oil. At the end of the day oil seems to be a subject people ike to get their knickers in a twist about, but at the end of the day as long as you buy a decent quality brand of fully synthetic oil you can't go far wrong.

I use Shell Helix, wrightly or wrongly who knows. I'll also be adding some ZDDP wrightly or wrongly this year due to the ever increasing need for oil companies to produce 'Greener' oil.

AFAIK using a synth oil in our cars is not a good idea due to those oils having even lower ZDDP as those oils are designed for cars with cats. I'll be adding twice the amount of ZDDP to the Mobil1 of my 930 as I will in my 3.2 carrera.

Alex, which actual oil did you use?

Nathan,
I,ve started using shell helix as you posted a while back, what brand of zddp do you use and where can it be purchased, thanks.

it's super s, i'm not sure if it is the weather but I seem to be getting a lot more White smoke on startup with it...

That's a semi synthetic and should be ok providing you change it every year or 5K miles, whichever is sooner.
I personally would add some ZDDP additive to make sure it was high enough.
I'm going to add half a bottle of additive to my carrera.
